Getting around La Plagne
Started by User in France, 5 Replies
Aime la plagne is high above Plagne Centre. It is linked to Centre by piste and the 'Telemetro' gondola. I think it runs late into the night so you will have no issue getting about.

Having said that, of all the villages Aime would be my last choice. It does seem a little souless and is pretty much just one or two huge hotels/buildings with a few bars and shops on the lower floor.

Centre is probably the best for nightlife, however we stayed in Belle Plagne which was lovely if not quite quiet.

Bandit:

Thanks again, you're always there with the advice and explainations. I really appreciate it. That makes sense. I got them as i bought a double ski bag (wheelie) and i didn't want them rattling about.
I will pack them out as you describe.

When you say people store them tips down do you mean upside down? laying on the bindings? bases upward?

Dorset Boy : Thanks. as they cost me a small fortune i don't want to hurt them.

Ok, so i am going to try and explain this the best i can however i think a photo may better show what i am asking but as i just put my skis away i can't be bother to get them out again!

At the birmingham ski show i bought a couple of ski ties to hold my new planks together in transit or storage however i have a dilemma.

When i place the skis base to base they are obviously not flat, i.e. the bases do not touch along the full length. they arch away from each other in the middle under the bindings. You can squeeze them together though if you wish.
When i use the ski ties at the tips and tails where the bases naturally touch they have the ability to slide down the ski towards the binding as they are narrower at the waist. So i tried fastening the ski ties closer to the bindings but this has the effect of flexing the ski and pulling the bases together.

Is this ok to do? Will tying up the skis in this manner damage them in any way as they will be kept under tension.?

Personally i don't see how as it is flexing the ski in the same manner as you would when standing on them but i thought it better to ask.

I hope this makes sense

It's just wax, most of us use a Universal Wax which does nicely all the time :D No point in getting anal about it, too many doing that already by the look of it )

Talking of anal any body know how much wax costs for a sack and crack job

Having been away for the weekend, I've just picked up this thread. After reading the title I said to myself "this looks like a thread that could go 'off piste'.....and if it does the culprit will be Wickers". How right I was

Thanks Dave, i just checked mine and they came out the same as Edge and Wax set them.

bandit wrote:Snapzzz, when you arrive in resort, pop your skis and boots into a local ski shop and ask them to check the boot binding setup. Edge & Wax can only do a proper setup with YOUR boots in their possession.
Bindings don't come loose in transit, but you really do need to get them checked before use. If you are around an indoor slope, either EB's or SnR could do this for you. When it's done, watch and learn, it's a little more than a set of numbers.

Try and avoid having your edges ground at 1st service on new skis, it may change the edge angle. Ask Edge & Wax what your base and edge angles are, then buy some light servicing tools to keep your edges sharp between big services. Ask them for advice. Heavy servicing can seriously reduce the life of a pair of skis.

Thanks Bandit, that all makes sense.
I think i will be paying a visit to Tamworth snow dome prior to my first holiday so i may just do that.
I am assuming its a quick job, do stores generally charge for this?

So in resort, i guess its different from place to place, but on average how much does it cost to get a shop to edge and wax?

Also, having just purchased my own skis i was wondering about setting the bindings and such. I hear its bad practice to do your own and they really need to be set by a qualified ski tech?
Mine were set up buy 'edge and wax' who asked basic questions about my ski level, age, weigh, height and boot size so they could set them up for me.
I tried my boots on them and they drop in just fine.
Should i just go out and ski them or have them checked in resort?
Also can you bindings adjust or alter in anyway during transit?

I'm still learning all this stuff
