We tend to shop at the local Sherpa, Casino or Spar when we are in France and have no car, we only go to the big Inter Marche, if we have the car. Most of the time we are shoping just for the two of us so the cost is not so bad. We always try to shop local, because we had a small shop in our village at home that was more expensive than the nearest supermarket, and has now closed down. Small shops are a great place to meet locals home and abroad.
