Are you on a package holiday with a tour operator??
If so do they offer any beginners week packages???
This could be easier than trying to sort out everything yourself.
I'm not certain about Alpes D'Huez but it is also important to make sure you book to start your lessons near your accommodation. There may be more than one ski school meeting point.

I'm at Gatwick! No harm in being prepared........

The first group booking for Jan 30th 2016 in ADH - Hotel Christina have a confirmed booking now.

Zenith have said they will hold the present pricing for the group for a month - April 11th.
After that things are likely to change.
Mind you if someone books after Christmas on a really good last minute offer - I would prefer not to know!

I think there are still two rooms free for single person bookings.

You need both. Long turns and short turns.
Neither are "correct".
Use each depending on conditions and the slope and the number of other skiers around.
And simply what you feel like doing at the time.
