Kids and Queues?
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 30 Replies
When I was in Niederau last year the first thing our instructor told our (all English) group was "don't be British when queuing". This meant just glide straight to the most convenient little gap of the general melee by the lift and work your way in, not aggressively, but just unashamedly, no concessions to kids or anyone else. We all mastered the art pretty quickly and no one ever seemed to mind. I tried it again this year, but unfortunately everyone else in the line was British and I got a right mouthful from all sides ! I tried explaining that it was the "European way" and that everyone should do it, but I don't think I convinced anyone ! I ended up buying drinks in the bar afterwards by way of apology ! But I still prefer the "European way".

I echo Emma's comments. If you decide to stay in N, rather than O, you will be within easy no-bus reach of the beginners' slopes. I've never been there at Christmas, but judging from the still Christmassy feel I've encountered there in January , I can imagine it's pretty special.
ICE - how common?
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 57 Replies
I've certainly learned quite a bit from reading this thread. As a relatively new skier, I have been in groups with more experiencded people than me complaining about how "icy" the pistes were, when I thought to myself "seems more like hard packed snow to me. But they're more experienced, so they must be right". Now after reading this, it seems that the hard-packed surface is far more common than true ice, and, like one or two others, the times I have encountered real ice are very few and far between ... but memorable ! If I've seen a patch coming up I've tended to "freeze" (pun intended) and just hope to glide over it intact without any lateral movement or change in my body posture - waiting for the nice white stuff to re-appear in a few metres.

Dave, totally agree about the hazelnut - irresistible.
