Yes, our local had some in this week. Not the least bit tempted, I have a jacket. But I really need a pair of gloves, and they had none. I have several pairs with the right thumb ripped open. Have kept the current pair going for 2 seasons, (13 weeks), with gaffer tape. Top of the range Reusch at under £20 would do it!

Fitness is useful, but for skiing longevity and safety, strength and mobilty figure much higher. The problem is maintaining Str + mob, tends to be time consuming.

That Tony is VERY impressive. Your weight loss is a bit too quick, but I do know that once you set the eating life style, then confidence breeds confidence.
Weight is an important factor. I know that you have increased your ski weeks, and as age catches up, then knee and hip injuries may kick in. Keeping a light body minimises the impact. It does sound as though you have modified your thoughts, in that you have previously stated that you do not exercise for skiing. With the weight loss, you are in a really good position to gain physical strength. Mobility is an important factor, ~ having strong core strength allows you to maximise on mobililty. Maintaining mobility decreases the risk of injury. You will not be disadvantaged for speed. The key on speed is being able to control the speed, and that needs strength on the turn. ADMIN ~ that is 500 per leg! My sports scientist says that it is important to maintain equilibrium on leg power, so equal exercise splits! It only takes the time of 50% of the TV news. |

Really enjoyed the photos, Alistair. Thanks for that. The Oeztal is of interest, we are headed there this season.
Re the mountain chapel, Austria being a staunchly Catholic country, the locals never seemed to lack for a reason to erect a mountain chapel, or a cross. My understanding is they mostly are erected by the farmers who own the land, but they are a community chapel. Our wee chapel on the Marbachjoch has three rows of benches, sitting three a side, hence, seating for 18. When I can get photobucket to fire up, I will stick one of my paintings up of our chapel. A key feature of mountain chapels is a public record of local deaths. There is usually a memorial book, and locals insert pages containing photos, and small memos. I have put in pages a couple of UK guys who were instructors in Niederau during my seasons, one who was killed skiing on the Marbachjoch. There is another similar small chapel on the route to the Feldalpenhorn, above Auffach. It shouldn't surprise me, but it does. If this chapel/memorial book was in the UK, it would be vandalised. |

Doubt if there is a direct bus Ellmau to Kitz, I will try and have a look later. You can catch the skibus to Hopfgarten, then jump on a train or a bus to Kitz. No, not booked my flights, I usually get my January flights for nothing, Edinburgh to Munich (air points) |
