although it's more likely you'll not feel free at all :D :) :)
Back pack ski trip through the alps

mggsnbdr wrote:So I've bought a round trip ticket to Zurich, arrive early morning of 12-18 leave morning of 12-24.

I have this idea that I can stash my crap somewhere in zermatt, interlaken etc and ski (actually snowboard) from town to town for 5 days, ending back where I stashed my crap, pack up and head back to zurich...basically a snowboarding backing combo.

However...I have NO IDEA where to begin on this one. I would welcome any advice, or even a complete itinerary.

Thanks all

I think no is the short answer. It's common to tour between ski stations but it requires some experience which I'm assuming you've not got so far. There's a problem with a board doing this anyway, you'll some fairly specialised kit to do it as you need to make ascents. Some bits on my blog http://snowslider.net/category/outdoors/ski-touring/ might give you an idea what touring's about.

You can do some day tours out of Zermatt and rent what you need and see how you go. You'll want to get a few day tours under your belt before tackling something major over days though. In terms of fitness you need to be looking at climbing 1000m per day carrying 10-15 kg in the sack and around 8kg on the feet.

and of course, it's not really something you should do alone without extensive mountain experience

For the "non-professional" this is actually a really useful tip.

Although I'm sure everyone would welcome your helpful, positive, inclusive, knowledgeable advice ...

I genuinely thought you were joking when I started to read that, and I apologise for not taking you seriously.

If you want some helpful, positive, inclusive, knowledgeable advice, which you obviously don't, then don't jack the car up on the side of snowy mountain to put chains on, it's totally silly and recklessly dangerous on an sloped icy surface.

Personally, I don't fit chains much more than anyone else in fact probably less, once last year and many years not at all. I have not ever needed to jack the car up to do it nor have I needed to position the car wheels to get the chains off.

In your defence I can only assume you've got some really old chains and haven't followed your own advice to practice with them at home.

If you prefer to remove the wheels and take them indoors and fit chains in the comfort of indoors then please be my guest.

odd that, "todays" special is always a pannini ) my mum makes my sandwiches when I'm flying back to CH but I have to make my own on the way out :D

If you can get your sandwiches past the securidee goons at a UK airport, then you could make a fortune selling the technique. A quick read of the PPRUNE site will give you a feel for the large numbers of airline cabin staff who have had their own food confiscated, and are very angry.

no problem but they did want to open my hand luggage the other week when I'd got a christmas cake my mother had given me

I'm stunned by that, it's like the car park of the Bluewater shopping centre in Les Gets.

That's unfair to Bluewater, their parking is orderly and spacious, except on Bank Holidays

yes, but did you like my zeitgeisty "down with the people" reference there ? ) )

 am I being slow and we're onto spoof answers now :?:

I've not seen a pair of ladder chains for 15 years and I can't see that working with anything else. I am getting an insight into what's going at the side of the road when it snows though :)

I suppose the Golf is like all cars, there's three models

1) needs alloys
2) came with alloys
3) built for granny to do the shopping

it's only funny when chav teens get (3) and stick alloys on it ) like Top Gear the other week trying to make the car go faster and slowing it down with a spoiler.
