you've got to be joking? jack the wheels up to put chains on! that's got to be a wind-up.
I think you'll find they work for some sub-forums and not others.
Not skiing in the pre-alpes

Some "snowshoe action" from Schwarzsee in the pre-alpes, they shut the lifts on the Schwyberg a few years back which has turned the area into a favourite local playground for the self-powered. Perfect conditions and I've never seen so many people up there!

Les Gets isn't THAT bad. It's nice enough. I only noticed one shop selling all manner of newspapers (like the one they have on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh) and I never saw any cars with UK plates. But i don't think it's that cheap - especially if you are looking for something budget.

I'm stunned by that, it's like the car park of the Bluewater shopping centre in Les Gets.
msej449 wrote:I've just put my winter tyres on my car. Like you, I can't take chains. My owner's manual says they only fit on the 15" rims, and not on the 16"/17"/18". Beware chain retailers who say "it should be OK". I finally went for winter tyres because, if you think about it, it actually doesn't cost any more than the swap-over charge (around £50 for all four). The softer winter tyres are better in the cold anyway, even in the UK. Only problem is you may still need chains to (a) convince French police and (b) when you have to handle icy slopes or very deep snow. The ideal option is a set of winter rims plus winter tyres plus chains (this is why you see flash cars in the Alps with grotty wheels - they're on their winter rims).

obviously (a) is because the French police know (b) :) :)

you won't actually see a really flash car on grotty wheels, you might see some chav's car which normally has some horrid alloys on it with steel wheels in the winter. An actual performance car really did need alloys, it's just the whole world's forgot why we have alloys other than cosmetic reasons :D so in the winter they'll still have alloys on them, in fact where the local MOT-type organisations exist they'll not approve steel wheels on those cars anyway in the winter for safety reasons. Chances are they'll drop to smaller wheels and tyres as they're better in snow and allow chains to be fitted as well.

odd that, "todays" special is always a pannini ) my mum makes my sandwiches when I'm flying back to CH but I have to make my own on the way out :D

I've flown with them 12 times this year, I think they're fine but they were the only people flying the routes I needed :) Good point about the catering but I think Inghams can reasonably argue it wasn't part of their advertised service, unless it was of course in which case you might have a argument. In practice, I think you'll find they reserved the right to switch the flight to a coach trip, the hotel to a tent, the ski station to a dry slope and so on :D

depends where you're talking about, on or near piste somewhere like Gulmarg is probably just fine. But, the moment you're anywhere else you're going to need a guide, in part it's a cultural thing and you'd expect problems without using a local guide. Where are you going and what will you be doing?
