Don't know if there will be snow or not, I'm not familiar with St Johann but we ski in March every year and we definitely don't need as many layers. I'm usually ok in ski trousers a t-shirt and fleece with a jacket on top. But sometimes I don't bother with the jacket. Depends how high up we are and how windy it is. If you take a back-pack you can carry an extra layer for the kids just in case.

If they don't close lifts in high winds, you get situations like this: http://news.sky.com/video/1439840/dramatic-ski-resort-rescue

AFAIK regarding the UK half term week this year (14-21 Feb), the same week was shared by France (inc Paris), Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden and one or two old eastern bloc countries. Though France, Germany and Netherlands stagger their hols among their different regions. Maybe you were just lucky. Glad you enjoyed it.

Les Carroz has a couple of nice beginner slopes on the mountain, reached by a gondola, as well as a small nursery slope in the village. More experienced skiers have nice runs in Les Carroz and the rest of the grand massif e.g. Flaine, Samoens, reachable from Les Carroz. It's a nice village as well.

Here's a list of ski places that are within 3 hours travel from Munich https://www.j2ski.com/ski_resorts/Airports/Munich.html
I'm sure many places are reachable by train if you do some research. High altitude places are likely to still have the most snow, hence Tony_H's suggestion of Hintertux, which has a glacier. However many resorts stay open into April, so you should find snow in lots of places. You won't be on your own on the slopes, as late March is still ski season and tour operators still offer holidays at that time. Probably Austria will give you more choices than Germany. Enjoy the snow - you'll love it! You'll find places in every ski town to rent skis/board and boots but I'm not sure about other clothing. Can you borrow a jacket and ski pants from a friend? Or look on ebay? They are quite expensive to buy, unless you're going to ski/board again. |

Can't comment on Les Gets but I do know a thing or two about getting lessons. I've had group lessons and private lessons and I made much more progress with private lessons. Having an instructor all to yourself means the lessons are tailored to your speed and style of learning. You also spend less time hanging around waiting for your turn in a group. As your friend is only going to be there for a few days, I'd recommend private lessons as she'll make more progress in a shorter time.

Brucie, what do you think conditions might be like at the end of March? We haven't booked anything yet but Soldeu is a distinct possibility providing the snow is reasonable. We'd normally head to Obergurgl/Hochgurgl or Saas-Fee but can't afford them this year!
Thanks, Allie. |
