i saw your pics very good, hopfgarten top is 1820m so snow is quite good from early on and they do have snow machines nearer to bottom if required, didnt see them working and that was at the beginning of the season 19th december.

Village is very quiet, one very rowdy pub called the silver bullett, but plenty of little romantic restaurants hidden away, a beautiful church with those all too familiar erratic chimes and a few nice shops, i think soll is about 10km by road and our rep said a return taxi is about 30 euros no matter how many get in so if would be quite easy to ski over on the last lift, have a look around in the evening and taxi back, although beware you have to buy an extra evening lift pass to do the floodlit skiing. but overall i fell in love with austria in hopfgarten, and it is only 5ish kms from cough cough you know where !

i thought ski-ing was excellent some extremeley scarey blacks from the top, wasnt very busy, hardly any queues for lifts, lovely mountain restaurants averagely priced. we did a ski safari instead of the usual last day skool race day and wish i had booked one earlier n the week as our instructor took us on some fantastic runs we would never of found. overall 9.5 out of 10

Not that this should have a bearing on it, but taking into account Mrs Tony-H. Schladming is a working town which includes its own brewery and as a result is not quite as picturesque as some of the other Austrian resorts. That being said its skiing is vast and varied, not to much on the black adrenalin runs. My group have been there 5 years on the trot so it must have something going for it. Brits are very much in the minority, so depending on how u like your Apres. We enjoy ourselves over there but then again we are slightly older than your average bears!!We are thinking of a change this year and considering Salbach!!

Yes I have seen some much better priced accommodation in Schladming, and its a place that definitely appeals. Mrs H likes her beer so thats fine! I am shocked by the prices for Ischgl, and I am struggling to find anything much cheaper in Solden either. Hmmmmm.

Solden
Ischgl

I've not read the rest of this thread (a little bit tipsy) but I know when we were in Obergurgl one of the local instructors was dissing Solden as it was similar in size to Obergurgl/Hochgurgl but with much more traffic. After driving through the town I could believe him.

Saalbach Hinterglem. You know you wanna.

dont know if this helps , but just returned from bad hofgastein, bad gastein, and must say all in all the best ski holiday i have had in many years.not just the skiing but supurb wellness hotel that done a great all in deal including full lift pass.
dorfgastein just down the road was absolutley supurb with long long red runs and a couple of blue runs also if you wish.
people were great , plenty of snow and sun.
if you or anyone else wants anymore info i will do best to help.

Bad G has been on the shortlist, but it hasnt risen higher than about 6th for Austria.
Ischgl looks like its going to be taken off now, as its proving stupidly expensive to get a holiday there.
Solden has a couple of better priced hotels.
I did my research regarding Solden and Obergurgl, and there is half as much skiing again at Solden and a more interesting place off the slopes too.
Schladming is however looking like becoming the Austrian number 1 now.
