Trouble is it's Austria

Why don't you like Austria Ian?

I have to say its usually low on my list because I like the huge areas and hight in France. My first trip to the Alps was Saalbach and I really enjoyed the place but when I went to Val D'Isere I felt like I had stepped up a league with the grandeur of the mountains.

I will go to Austria again one day though

I spent three or four days there August 1999 stayed at a place called Kolsass Weer just outside Innsbruck, found the people in the village very rude and unwelcoming, I never thought I would ever experience standing at a bar and the bar person looking at me then served the person behind, I just thought it was really funny, when we eventually did get served and it took a good 10 minutes the drinks were slammed down on the bar with my change, that was just one example of our experience there was a few more.
In kitzbuhel we were looked after really well , and also in Innsbruck where we watched the eclipse in 1999 out side a photography's shop with the owner and his family who brought two glasses of champagne for myself and mrs W.
So I am not naive and pretty well travelled enough not to tar all Austrians with the same brush, that would be untrue, but that is the out of season impression I have of small town Austria, I know many of you will disagree, how I viewed it was and still do " We have put up with you during the winter, we could do without you in the summer "

Thats odd, because I felt completely the same way about going from France to Austria - big peaks, more dramatic scenery, alpine buildings, cow bells, efficient lifts....etc.

I just love Austria.

I've been several times but just once skiing. The scenery is beautiful and they make sure it stays that way. The people are lovely I've always found, I'm sure there's the odd exception, (in fact there is some guy in the news today). The food - now there is a good enough reason in itself for visiting Ausria.

I stayed in a 2* Pension in Mayrhofen at Christmas and the standards were great, far better than anything I've seen in France. And the beer is alot cheaper, as is eating on the slopes.

I've been to the Ski Amade area in the summer and it is a lovely place, but it's not that high, I've haven't looked up the snow record though.

I am looking for a nice small Austrian resort for next year - which is how I found this site.

Thats a cracking pic, and not dissimilar from the one I posted on the Photography thread this week which I took in St Anton. Very atmospheric. I watched Hig Altitude this week, a re run of the episode that they Graham tried to climb to the peak of Mont Blanc from Italy, and some of the colours at sunrise up there were unbelievable. I'd love to be able to get up a mountain like that for sjunrise and capture it on camera.
