Well - looks like we STILL have no clear conclusion. Definitely gonna go for the "TRY AND KEEP IT UNDER 20KG's with your BOOTS IN " - option.

I am not a gambling man - and I bet you the day we check-in - it will be with the Check-in Desk Agent from hell, with a Tape Measure, measuring basket, and Whip in hand!

And of course - things are NEVER the same. Honestly. Last trip we took to Italy - my bags weighed something lik 19 KG's - no problem this side - coming back they weighed 22KG's ...... so kids - explain that, and before you say anything about buying more clothes blah blah - NOPE - exactly the same as when we went out......

So something else to consider: do you get heavier with altitude ;-)

Nevermind.

See, there you have it, too busy eyeing her up to notice what she was up to with her feet. Why do you think they put the fit ones on check in????? (not always the case, I know)

You definitely get lighter with altitude, because weight = mg i.e. your mass, which is constant (unless you eat too much chocolate!) multiplied by the force of gravity, g, which decreases the further you get from the centre of the earth.

You must have had something like wet washing in your suitcase, or you were wearing lighter clothes going back, or you were carrying less in your hand luggage going back, or else their scales were wrong.
