How about buying one together with your ski pass? There is usually an option to do it and it provides a good coverage including for search and rescue.

but the one with your ski pass (certainly in France) won't cover full ongoing medical expenses and repatriation if needed.
The Carre Neige (in France for example) is excellent for slope side cover and to the medical centre etc but then (As far as I am aware - happy to be corrected on this) your usual medical agreement has to come in which could be an EHIC, but still will leave you unable to get home with any help if this is needed - this would include changing flights etc.

Oh and - just look on this page - there is nearly always an ad for insurance, alternatively go to a price comparison website - but do check you are buying the right cover !! Off-piste for example is often exluded.

I use price comparison websites, but check the cover for each policy carefully, especially for things like loss of hired equipment. Given that a set of skis could cost £500 or more you want to make sure if they get stolen there is enough cover there. I usually end up buying a mid-price policy rather than the cheapest one.

Then a combination of Carre Neige and some sort of travel insurance. I knew someone who only had travel insurance but had to be rescued by heli and she received a bill for 10 thousand Swiss. She and her friend made the wrong turn off-piste and realised they were getting seriously cliffed out, started climbing back but it was getting dark so they had no choice but to call the rescue.

I've been looking recently and found Sainsburys do cover with winter sports and offer 25% off (I think) if you have a nectar card, reasonable price outcome too.

If you go on holiday more than once a year it generally works out cheaper to get annual cover.
As has already been said your E11 (or whatever its new name is) won't cover the costs of rescue or repatriation, merely the equivalent of the local NHS eqivalent (which isn't free in many countries). The Carre Neige will pay for the rescue only. A good travel policy will cover your rescue, repatriation and medical expenses
