Travelling in the Alps in Feb for 3 weeks beginning in L'Alpe d'Huez to end up in Austria

Can anyone recommend the best way of travelling through the Alps beginning in L'Alpe d'Huez and ending up in Austria? Train, bus or hire car? I'd like to cover maybe 4 good resorts en route. I'd love to hear suggestions (I'm an advanced skier and am interested in skiing rather than nightlife), but am toying with the idea of Chamonix, then Zermatt and 2 others, but am open to ideas.
