Jackson Hole Spend On Rare New Double Chairlift

Published : 31-Jul-2011 09:46

The iconic resort of Jackson Hole in Wyoming, USA is spending around £3m this summer on improvements, the majority of it going on a new double chairlift.

Usually when a new chair is built these days it's a quad or 6 seater chairlift, but Jackson Hole believe they only need a double chair in the chosen location to help improve skier flow around the mountain and give a new access route back up from South Pass Traverse, below the existing Thunder Lift, to the top of the Bridger Gondola.

Two More Dry Slopes Saved

Published : 25-Jul-2011 09:24

Following the Scottish Government rescue of the famous Midlothian dry ski slope by Edinburgh earlier this year, two more of the country's dry ski slopes have been saved for the time being.

Many of the UK's artificial surface slopes are operated by local councils, often at a loss, and so are finding themselves on the front line in the current scenario of swathing cuts that councils are being forced to make across the country. At the same time, despite the durability of Dendix, many are reaching the end of their natural lives and finding the money to buy in new slope surfaces is a challenge for most. A third factor affecting some is the success of the UK's six indoor snow centres.

Meribel – Upgraded Lifts and a New Run For 2011-12

Published : 22-Jul-2011 10:17

Meribel has announced its key improvements for the coming winter 2011-12 and the creation of a new piste (although, as with other new pistes announced and opened around the 3 Valleys over the past 35 years, it seems unlikely this will add to the static 600km total runs measure the area has claimed since the early 1970s).

UK Skier Numbers Drop for Third Season In A Row Says Industry Study

Published : 12-Jul-2011 01:54

Austria - On The Up

Crystal, the UK's largest tour operator, have released their annual study of the UK ski market. The bad news is that it was down again for the third season in a row, after hopes a year ago that last winter would be the 'bounce back winter.' The good news is that Crystal reckon that the smaller decline last winter was due to exceptional circumstances, in particular Easter being at it's next-to-latest possible date on April 24th ruling out a lot of destinations for Easter breaks. The good news for tour operators too, Crystal say, is thast their share of the market increased by 1%. The top seven operators' market shares representing 85% of the total tour operator market.
