I'm about to book a trip to Mayrhofen staying in the snow houses. I'm wondering whether it is better value to go for the half board option (+£100/wk) or to go for B&B and try out a few different restaurants? Can anybody advise? How much would a typical 2 course meal cost?

We're going over New Year, so I'm also thinking it might be expensive to eat out on New Years' Eve and NY Day ...

Any suggestions would be much appreciated,

Thanks.

Ahh. Mayrhofen, and the Snowhomes. I have done both B&B and HB before. It depends very much on where you stay and with which restaurant they put you into for the dinner to be honest. I previously stopped at the Landhaus Roscher and they put us in the Strass for dinner each night. As good a hotel restaurant as that is, the food and service wasnt fantastic by any means, and the 3 choices were not always something you would have chosen. For £100pp, its represents a reasonable deal, provided you are not particularly fussy eaters.

Mayrhofen has some fantastic places to eat, all at varied prices for different kinds of food. Obviously the euro rate hasnt helped, but to give you and idea, you might expect to pay around E15 for a decent 2 course meal in most places. Some will be slightly cheaper, such as Ciao (Italian) or Hotel Neue Post do a really well priced and hugely selective menu, and some will be slightly more, such as Mo's if you have a steak for example to follow a starter.

Its a hard one to offer a specific answer to, as you tend to get what you pay for. I wouldnt say eating out in Mayrhofen came particularly expensive, and you can do it on a budget too. I reckon 20 euros a night would be pretty comfortable for a 2-3 course menu, which is just over the £100 mark for the week, so my preference would be to go B&B and try some different places each night. There are a lot of good restaurants I can suggest if you want to PM me.

Thanks for the reply Tony, it sounds like you've spent some time in Mayrhofen -I'll get back to you if I need any restaurant ideas.

If anyone's interested in a cheap hol, Lastminute.com are selling Inghams snow houses holidays to Mayrhofen for £379 over New Year! Saving £300 on the price you'd pay by booking directly with Inghams...

Hi Rose,

They're small B&B's apparently. I haven't tried them before..they're also the cheapest way of me managing to ski this New Year!

We stayed in Mayrhofen over last new year and ate out every night. One night we could not get into The Neue Post was New Years Eve because it was fully booked.
I would recommend The Neue Post for price and quality. We paid typically 35 - 40 euros for a 2/3 course dinner + drinks. The hotel next door is about the same standard, but I don't recall the name.
I think it depends on what you want to eat. If you go to the shop opposite the Penken ski lift after skiing they sell great sandwiches, soups, chicken at what I thought was a good price.
Get out on the streets on New Years Eve for drinking, music and fireworks, you will have a great time.

Good point - I would recommend pre booking restaurants for that time of year. Definitely try Mo's on the cross roads down the main street, Hotel Neue Post further down the hill, Mannis further up, Hotel Kramerwirt behind the church, Ciao is a nice Italian just off the main street from Mo's, and they do nice food in Coupe & Moore which is more of a bar on the main street. Cohi Bar is also a decent place to try close to Mo's.

Oh yes, the butchers opposite the Penken lift is perfect for a snack at lunc time or pre apres drinks. They do amazing meat off the joint in a bun.

And dont forget Happy End, opposite the Penken lift, just across the road from the Ice Bar (which can get very mental....you'll hear it)

Enjoy

Stayed in Landhaus Roscher, a Mayrhofen snowhome in March and it was absolutely fine. Clean, basic breakfast, quiet location but only 5-10 min walk from the gondolas. Coup & More on the main street was a very good meal but the absolute best was the Hotel Krammerwirt - THE best steak we've ever had not to mention the starter of deep-fried Cammerbert with cranberry cream - yum! Excellent service too. You'll not be stuck for nice eating places in Mayrhofen :D
