Damp shouldn't be a big problem so the cellar is just fine, but dry isn't too good. Skis also shouldn't really be stored upright clamped together, horizontal is generally better than vertical, that's just the way a shop does it.

I would have got away with it if it wasn't for those pesky kids!

Do make sure skis are dry befor you leave them in the ski bag over summer. A friend made that mistake and it wasn't pretty.

When Mike says basement, it may not be the dank place the word conjures up. Because of the movements that winter frost causes in the ground, foundations in cold climates need to be several feet deep (below the frost line). If you're going that deep anyway, you might as well make the space livable. So most basements in modern houses in Canada/Northern US are fully finished with nine or ten foot ceilings, and are part of the living area. My skis are in my office/sports storage room in the basement.

All my ski live in the box room standing on their ends. Unfortunately I don't have room to lay them flat.

Mine are 2 meters away from my "office"!

However I have to hide some in another room since sons are "viewing' several models which I have not yet tested!

This picture is the Summer resting place of most of my skis! Under kitchen floor, (those black bars are broken carbon fiber ski polles)
