Most of the issues that I have had with lost baggage have been in transiting through big airport hubs. Apparently when you have a transit time more than about 2 hours the bags get stored in a transiting luggage room rather than going straight to the gate/departure luggage area. Then someone forgets to go and get it, or can't find it before your plane leaves.
BA have always been good for me. It is usually KLM that loses my luggage.

Don't worry. You'll be on holiday, you'll be buzzing, excited, the andrenaline will be flowing! Well it works for me until the evening when I feel totally whacked.
have you considered UPS / FedEx for your skis and boots :?:
Drive up the night before and stop at a local Travelodge. Rooms currently on offer ar various sites for £9! At least you will get some rest that way.
My wedding dress cost me £110 twelve yrs ago to sent to Austria via TNT.
Very expensive but nessesary.

Only prob for us is I am working until 6.00pm on the Saturday and our flight is 6.55am on the sunday morning. Allowing a 2 and half hour drive, plus two hours check in. Would have to leave about 3.00am sunday morning. Nightmare.
