I would still look at Canada as an option - especially if you booked an early special with one of the operators. One area that has excellent beginner experience and also a world famous experience for good skiers is Fernie, British Columbia. It does not have the price of more expensive North American options and has the charm and cool of a small western mountain town. Real skiing, real people and a real mountain that caters to both beginners and good skiers.
