katie,
Great question!
Perhaps before we start debate and multiple posts, we should have an agreement on parameters to consider on what is great resort!
And also a scale of 1 -10 for each parameter. ( with 10 maxium)
Here is mine; ( in level of priority)
1. Snow conditions ( after all we are skiers, depth and grooming)
2. Varied ski terrain for all levels of skiers)
3. Support staff quality ( counter, hotel, chalet etc)
4. Infra-structure ( from lifts, to signs, chalet, bathrooms)
5. Social Context ( ambiance, attitudes, type of skiers etc..)
6.Access ( ease of transportation, parking, etc..)
7. View ( nature, buildings, village area etc..)
8. Price/value factor
9. ( leave open to others)
10. (leave open to others)

pavelski,
great idea, gives it more info for other skiiers!
ok, well im actuly in love for corvara so, keeping in the same order of parameters:
1,snow)-7
2,terrain)-8
3,staff)-10
4,infa structure)-8
5,social)-9
6,Access)-8 (although greatly depends on weather you fly, drive or go by train)
7,view)-9
8,personal accomadation (chalet/aparment/hotel)- hotel la perla -10!
9,skiiers and snowboarders?)-6 not great for snowboarders
this takes a bit more time than just writing down a specific resort, but for first time skiiers i can imagin that this could be a good guide.

So difficult.
I'd probably plump for somewhere in Austria (Kitzbuhel or St Anton) for the scenery, mountain charm and tree level skiing.
That said, I've been to Serre Chevalier 3 times and it's been great every time. I skiied in waist deep powder there on two holidays and it has a fair amount of charm (and lots of tree level skiiing) for France.

I'd go for Serre Chevalier
1,snow)-8
2,terrain)-9
3,staff)-7
4,infa structure)-8
5,social)-9
6,access)- 9
7,view)-9
8,accommodation - Chalet hotel Le Lievre Blanc (Inghams) 6 (unmodernised bedroom with hideous wallpaper!
9,skiers and snowboarders)- 9 for skiers, don't know about snowboarders
We loved Serre Chevalier. Went late Feb, outside UK school holidays; must have missed French hols too, cos slopes were DESERTED! Were told by French friends that it would be v cold and windy but it wasn't. :-)
