The forthcoming Freeride World Tour event at Verbier is being re-scheduled.

The organizers decided that the competition Nissan Xtreme Verbier 2011 by Swatch will be postponed and will not be held on Saturday, 19 March as originally scheduled.

It has also been confirmed that the Freeride Juniors Verbier 2011 by Swatch will now be held on Saturday, 19 March at 11:00 a.m.

On Friday at 19:00, organizers will make another decision about the possibility of holding the event on Sunday, 20 March.

Inetersting. I doubt it's because of snow on Bec des Rosses, I spoke to one of the organisers last week and they said that the competition would go ahead as usual. The mountain admitedly looks horrible, but it always does and apparently when you look at it from above there is much more snow than is visible from below - usually it's the rocks that are visible. Plus they still hold the competition on this day, junior freeride, though I don't know if it also takes place on Bec des Rosses. If not, possibly they want to postpone it because of avalanche danger, there was some snow this week, so with 60-degree slopes it needs some time to stabilise. Bummer! was looking forward to a nice picnic tomorrow.

It's on for Sunday....

Hot off the presses, organizers have just decided that the Nissan Xtreme Verbier 2011 by Swatch will happen this Sunday, 20 March at 10 a.m. Men and women, skiers and snowboarders, will compete on the awe-inspiring, 500-meter, north face of the Bec des Rosses.

Can't imagine that the decision to delay the main event was to allow the snowpack to stabilize if they were prepared to let the junior event go ahead on this day? Although admittedly they won't be skiing the same lines as the pros.

Probably more likely that the decision was made because the weather conditions and visibility is looking better for the Sunday? Great news that it is going ahead anyway and that they are streaming the event live on their site!

I didn't know they would have juniors on the same mountain as there was a talk about using the front side of Mont Gele. As it happened juniors didn't take place this Saturday as it was definitely a "skiing is for tourists" day, when you couldn't see 3 meters ahead. It was expeceted to be better, hence they thought that juniors could go ahead. But weather closed in almost completely around 9.30. Main competition was very good (getting out of the area certainly wasn't) and Ducroz got his title back! Someone got helicoptered out though...

This was the intended route for the Junior comp - right-side of Becc des Rosses where the main event was held.

Shame the weather cancelled it out for them. :(

Followed the live stream of the main event - some great freeride skiing but mighty relieved to see Ludo Lovey escape with just a dislocated shoulder after his heart-stopping tumble 400 metres down two rock faces!

We didn't know who it was, but good news it wasn't something more serious. This mountain looks seriously sick.
