Hi- I just moved to Utah not too long ago and really want to learn how to ski. I'm a bit intimidated to just throw myself at the mountain so was wondering if anyone knew of any "learn to ski at home" videos or tutorials online I could access before hitting the slopes and taking actual lessons at the resorts. Any information would be helpful. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry too much about tutorials etc. In order for them to make sense, you would need some frame of reference. That might be sports that share common concepts, but more importantly, a feel for the environment, the equipment, and the sensations involved. By all means watch the stuff on you-tube. It'll stir the stoke, but you may have little to relate to it.

Best way to prepare for partaking in the Utah champaign (that's what they call the powder there) is to get fit by finding a sport that is fun, and improves balance, co-ordination, etc. Mountain biking is big in Utah, so I would take advantage of opportunities there.

Are you sure you want to ski ? Don't forget about snowboarding, it's not just a kids thing.

If I might read between the lines though.... don't be too worried about being a beginner and looking a fool. Just enjoy the adventure and leave the ego at home. Take lessons as you need them. People start skiing and snowboarding at every age. If it's right for you, you'll know very quickly. Just go for it.

Getting lessons really is a must! Even if it's just a couple, you will be far safer by having some idea on technique!

If you are a bit intimidated get a private lesson. You won't start by using a lift, usually just on a relatively flat area of snow to just get used to sliding etc. This means you won't be exposed (shut it, Wickham) on the mountain or in any real danger whatsoever.
