The Canyons

The Canyons is Utah’s largest ski and snowboard resort and one of the five biggest in the U.S. with 18 lifts covering 8 mountains and 3,700 acres. The terrain is very diverse from the “all green” High Meadow lift servicing only beginners’ runs to the “all black” Ninety-Nine-Ninety lift servicing only advanced and expert runs.

Most people like a nice long groomed run, and The Canyons has one of the longest - Harmony is a whopping 2.84 miles long winding its way through forests and under bridges. If tree skiing is your passion, you will find extensive forests of both pine and aspen. You can spend a week at The Canyons and not be able to ski all the runs.

Snowmaking :- The Canyons is able to augment natural snow, with 40 Snow Cannons.

Ski Lift Capacity :- The 18 Ski Lifts of The Canyons are able to uplift 38,000 skiers / snowboarders per hour.

There is an airport within two hours drive, so ski weekends, snowboard breaks and short ski holidays to The Canyons are perfectly feasible. Salt Lake City Airport is just one hours drive away, in good driving conditions, so you can be on the piste quickly.

Skiing in The Canyons

The Canyons rapidly expanding terrain is currently best suited to advancing intermediates and better skiers. A relatively small proportion of the mountain is beginner terrain although, that being said, a small proportion (14%) of a large ski area is still quite a lot! In fact beginners have the twin benefits of the award winning Perfect Turn method of tuition, available throughout American Skiing Company resorts and the High Meadows learning area - a 25 acres system of trails especially designed for new starters with a mix of slopes and open runs. Unlike traditional North American ski areas, this learning terrain is located up the mountain, and is served by its own quad so that you can enjoy the view.

Intermediates will find that 44% of the trails are graded 'more difficult' with plenty of fast fun cruising down through the forest. Expert skiers were blessed when Ninety-Nine 90 peak became lift served with spectacular views of Utah's Summit county and a reputation for knee deep powder on wide open slopes with 360 degree access to the downhill.

The mountain's peak, the highest terrain the resort will reach, is one of the few sectors above the treeline - the vast majority of terrain being on forested slopes. If you like tree skiing then for thinly gladed terrain try The Pines on the north-side of Saddleback. For steep and deep the north-side trees off Tombstone is the best option. There are many other areas to attract advanced and expert skiers who will find 43% of the current extent of The Canyon's terrain suited to them. Most notable are the chutes on the south side of Murdock Peak with the powder slopes above accessible with a short hike.

Snowboarding in The Canyons

The Canyons' trail map includes the location of more than half a dozen natural half pipes, including one in the double black diamond terrain below Murdock Peak and another in the gladed terrain of Escape Woods, also rated double-black.

The Canyons Aprés Ski

Most guests will head for Park City when the lifts close. Here there are some 20 or so bars and clubs to enjoy if you don't want to make a night of it in one of the restaurants. Favourites include Italian Cisero's Ristorante and Night Club and Mulligan's Irish Pub and Restaurant. Other evening activities include a choice of three cinemas, the Egyptian theatre - one of Utah's oldest working theatres , the recently opened Eccles Center for the Performing Arts and the Kimball Art Centre - a local network for visual artists.

In 2009 a new law came into effect changing Park City’s and indeed the State’s bar scene. In the past purchasing a temporary membership was required to get into a bar or club. Bars, pubs and clubs now have an open door policy to welcome all comers over 21 and no longer require customers to purchase a temporary membership.

It's easy to get in to Salt Lake for big city attractions and facilities, including NBA basketball, Utah's Symphony orchestra, Opera and Ballet companies and the Mormon's Temple Square and famous Tabernacle Choir. Trips to the casinos in nearby Nevada are also organised from here.
