IceGhost, Ta, you'll be welcome to come ski with me in my bit of the alps anytime :D

Though I might have to swear you to secrecy on the location )

I'll wait for the others on your list to squawk about their lack of an invite :P

I've been on my own to Austria before, to a hotel. There was another single bloke staying there so we were put together at dinner and went out to a couple of bars and clubs one or two nights. Wouldn't want to risk it in a country where I didn't speak the lingo though, and probably wouldn't go hotel again, as the chalet option sounds better for meeting people.

As for the ski-ing, I found I preferred to go with the SCGB for the first couple of mornings, then either skied off on my own or with people i'd skied with on the first days. Some of the SCGB reps are a little stricter than others with regards to letting non-members ski with them, and it tends to depend how many members they have with them. I've met a couple that were happy for anyone English speaking to join them on piste however many members they were with.

I go riding alone more than I do with others. It's all I spend my money on whilst my other snow-keen pals have other interests. I like both with equal measure. Sometimes a weekend alone is great to calibrate the mind. A week and you really need to latch on to others to enjoy it. Went to Chile alone this summer and had an awesome time, met up with a couple of Aussies, a Brazilian and an American.

That reminds me I have a place going spare in a rather nice hotel in Saalbach-Hinterglemm to fill for the 12th to 19th December if anyone is interested :) unforseen circumstances  :(

Anyway off to Zermatt tomorrow for a quick weekend of reflection!!

Pav would be great but too good for us all, Rose and Bandit would spend all day talking about washing machines, and you're American so I could not possibly entertain spending time with you unfortunately. And you broked the lift.
