The Alps are currently on course for a tragically record-breaking number of fatalities this winter due to avalanches. The picture above shows a recent avalanche on Chanrossa in Courchevel.

The number is constantly changing, but as of 21 February 2026, the European Avalanche Warning Services (EAWS) had confirmed 99 deaths, distributed by country as shown below:

France: 28
Italy: 25
Austria: 15
Switzerland: 13
Spain: 8
Slovakia: 4
Slovenia: 3
Andorra: 1
Poland: 1
Norway: 1
