I do agree and am lucky to be fortunate to be able to off-set costs by being able to have flexibility with travel and no apartment/hotel costs, it's a shame companies seem to think it's acceptable to ratchet up the prices during school holidays etc ( verging on the criminal if you ask me ).

Also when an article is written for a newspaper/magazine with regards to skiing holidays, the reporter never has to pay the costs for going/staying/eating as the paper/magazine covers the costs ( in most cases ) and when this is the case as it's not their money they are spending they think the skies the limit, many never bother to do articles on what the average family holidays cot which probably puts many off going and trying a holiday in the mountains and snow.....which is a great shame.

Not attempting to wee on your chips Jon, but I looked at pricing this up myself last year, as a mate suggested we look at going to Les Arcs:

£65 return flights? Thats only the very cheapest headline price without any bags or skis. Random search saturday to saturday ex Luton inc 1 bag and pair of skis comes out to £160. Thats picking the more reasonable flight times both ways but equates to £52.99 out and £37.99 back, plus £19 for your bag and £50 for skis.

I priced up a weeks car hire from Geneva for a car big enough to carry 4 plus luggage etc and its between £250 and £350 a week, ex fuel. Plus snowchains is more. Allow £100pp for a car for 4 I reckon minimum.

Cheap week for an apartment in Les Arcs is 800 euros for 4 people in a shoebox, thats £200 each, but probably more for most at peak times.

Lift pass: £230

If you're going self catering, you'll probably have breakfast in the apartment for a couple of quid each by visiting the boulangerie and getting some ham/cheese/jam at the supermarche, lunch on the slopes allow £15, and maybe dinner out allow £30 inc wine/beer. Plus 2-3 beers apres at £7 a go, another £21 and you're looking at roughly £70 a day pp so just under £500pp for a week just on food. Probably cut down on lunch and have a cheaper dinner or eat in, or pass on the apres beers and have a couple of tinnies in the apartment instead.....and you might be able to cut that in half at a push. By my calculations, thats
£160 flights
£100 car
£200 apartment
£230 lift pass
£200 food and drink on your budget, £500 on my calculations of French prices
Total: £890 on your food budget, £1190 on mine. Probably somewhere in between, making it £1000pp

Again the apartment we stay in is owned by myself so no charges there for anyone , flights are booked mid week to mid week so cheaper than going Saturday to Saturday , a weeks car hire through auto-europe for four people ( economy diesel Opel Corsa , Peugeot 207 , Citeon C2/3 etc never paid more than £176 + fuel for a week, split between four people ).

Ski hire doesn't matter as mine and some friends are stored at my apartment and those that do hire usually get a good rate from Polairestar ski hire for being return customers.

For food costs, eating out in Bourg-St-Murice we can have a three course meal with beer etc for as little as 20 euros per head, or just a hearty main course for 8 - 11 euros plus beer.

The point I was trying to make is that you don't have to spend silly money to have a great time, eat where the locals eat, you will get better food for cheaper money, do you need a big fancy car when an good size economy will do just as well? etc.

I'm using BensBus when I go to Bourg-St-Maurice on the 10th December ( I usually hire a car but have decided to take it easy for a change ) for £73 return from Geneva.

At Aime train/bus station there are taxi's etc available to take you up to La Plagne from what I can remember so shouldn't be a problem.
