Val Thorens mid April - any opinons?
Started by User in France, 3 Replies
Hi,
The only week of the year I can go skiing is 12th - 19th April. We were thinking Val Thorens as it is high and more snowsure with easier access to the train we will be arriving on.

Has any one been here at this time of year? Is it a nice resort?

Also, we would like to find a catered chalet but direct to owners rather than tour company, or failing that a small friendly hotel...
does anyone know of any?!!

cheers
Jaz

Hi all, a final post on this topic !

My boots were great, the custom fit sole really made a difference - but I only felt the pins and needles once in the right foot and only because my foot had not warmed up - a few ankle rotations soon cleared it before I put the skiis on.

I am very glad I kept the boots.
I also checked out the resort sales and not one shop had my boots for any cheaper than the Snow and Rock sale price which I paid.

Can't wait to get them on my feet again next season!!

Thanks Trencher !

I have had the custom sole fit and I can definately feel the difference - the raised arch has pulled my big toe away from the end of the boot (and my nails are cut, ready and waiting!).

I am now finally excited rather than apprehensive about sking in my new boots !

I am off tomorrow to Tignes, so will let you all know how it goes!!
Thanks all,

I was just getting a bit obsessed with wanting my own skis after seeing a nice pair for £175 in London.

But you are right, I should wait until I know more about my own ski style !

Jaz
I know some people on here are based in Tignes, I was just curious, are there any ski bargins to be had in resort? and if so, which are the recomended shops?

I don't want to pay to hire some if I can buy some for not that much more money. The hire ski's are about 75Euro, but if I can buy some for less than 150Euro, I have made my money back in 2 trips!!

thanks all,
maybe soon I will no longer be a ski novice...!!

Thanks Trencher,

that was very useful information.

The 'pins and needles' feeling was never as bad as the pins and needles you get when you sit on your foot/leg and it goes dead - it doesn't feel like the circulation is cut off to the whole foot, just twinges on the dorsal and lateral side of the foot (outside top).

The boots are women's specific, and yes, they were heat treated first, although not for long.

I think it could be that they are slightly short and pushing on the big toe on that foot, hence they feel fine when flexed...but if it is as you say and they are likely to pack in then that can only be a good sign.

I hope!

Ok, thanks Max and powerhound,
very useful but I am now in 2 minds about this!!

I have them on now and the pins and needles is not so bad, it only occurs if I lift my leg up so it is parrallel to the floor, or if I sit on the floor with my legs out straight, (which may matter if falling over and then getting sudden pains) but not if I stand in skiing position and move around at the ankle.

They are now (as I have had them on for 30 minutes to test what they feel like,) making both my feet ache (they are heavy and my feet are tired after working on them all day...

The thing is, over the past 3 months or so I have tried on about 7 different types of boot, and this pair came out top - I am worried that there will be no boots in the resort which fit me any better so late on in the season, so I am leaning towards trying a footbed...

I mean, should ski boots feel as comfortable as trainers? or should I expect some level of discomfort.
I have only been sking once, I remember not liking the hire boots, but when on the ski's, I did not think about them...

cheers
Jasmin

Hi

I just bought some new boots in the Snow and Rock sale.
The guy in the shop said to wear them 10 minutes a day to wear them in before skiing (I am going next week).

I have been doing this, and whereas they felt perfect in the shop, the more I have them on and walking about, I am getting pins and needles in my right foot on movement.

When the foot is still it feels fine, there is no pinching just pins and needles and I can't work out which bit of the boot it may be which is causing it...

Is this normal for a new boot to feel a bit odd, or should I take it back to the shop asap? !!

cheers
Jasmin
