Ski distances on holiday

Oh Eccy Road (dreams), its only a pipe dream until I have finished this dissertation; I have only left the house 3 times this week (twice for a sandwich and once to Tesco)!

I don't think I could afford the handheld devices but the downloadable mobile phone software is pretty tempting.

Here you are:

Take a look :D

That does look pretty good, possibly a bit over the top with the million different recordings, and also very expensive. Good bit of kit though.

Are there any devices in the market which can be used when skiing that will give you accurate figures for how many km/m have been skied.
Although the website mentioned on the forum a while back gives approx distances depending on which lifts you use, it would be good if there was some sort of pedometer for skiing.

Any techies out there care to invent one?

Hi Will,

Its a tricky subject and the fact is you will proably never have the perfect ski (weapon) as you will get better, do different things, go a different amount of times.

The best thing to do is test a lot of types of skis as much as possible. You can either do this in-resort by asking ski shops for trial skis or go to a snowdome and trial a pair there.

The 3 main aspects of skis are (in my opinion) the width, radius and length of the skis.

The width of the centre of the ski (under the binding) will usually determine how much float you get on the snow. A wide waist (more than 80mm) will allow you to go through powder easilly and a narrow waist (65 - 75mm) will allow easier edge-to-edge transition. If you are going to be on-piste most of the time then I would say dont go above 75mm.

The radius of the ski is how tight the ski will turn under pressure. If you want to do lots of smaller turns then a radius between 12 and 16 metres is good and if you want to do fewer, faster, longer turns, then a larger radius would better. With the info you have provided, I would say a medium radius would be best so you can have the best of both worlds; something around 15 maybe.

The length of the ski is a very talked about topic and I think it comes down to personal preference and experience. In general, longer skis are more stable at high speed (they dont chatter so much) and allow you to float more in soft snow, whereas short skis are more agile, can turn sharper, are easier to control and cut into the piste better. Maybe a 165cm would be a good compromise.

Overall it sounds like you need an 'all mountain' ski but more for the piste than the pow. Go to a ski shop an ask them for their opinions as they are all trained. Something that is maybe 165cm long, between 70mm and 78mm with a radius of between 14 and 16.

I am forever buying new skis and then realising that actually I wanted/needed something else so it is worth trying before you buy.

This is an interesting idea. I have always done both leg buckles quite tightly with the thinking being that the tigher the boot is, the more control I will have making short and quick turns.

By having a looser lower buckle and increasing the flex of the boot, does this mean the boot will have more 'spring' in it when turning?

If so, that could work well short turns and racing as you would get more 'pop' from one turn to the next.

Anyone got any thoughts one this?

Wow! That is one of the best videos I have ever seen.
Even though you said he didnt make it, I was willing him on to finish, so close.
He even starts tucking: balls of titanium that lad!
Downhill and Super G racers carve most of the race. Slalom skiers try and carve but a lot get late on the gates so have skid to make it.
