I love Les Gets and there are a couple of late bars that would fit the bill, and the Igloo is open til 5am. A Flintstones-sized cote de boeuf on the slopes at Chez Nannon will see you right the day after.
The mix of skiing is good; total beginners' slopes to some hairier stuff. Also there's a BASS ski school; I've seen a few and these guys are great for total beginners, esp compared with Extremely Snotty Frenchmen, also known in resorts as ESF... |

If you look at flight prices NOW for geneva they're not that bad. Ditto car rentals. It all comes down to personal choice and so forth and some posters here are staunch advocates of the driving option but I would spend a few minutes thinking about the time/cost comparisons of getting somewhere like Portes de Soleil by plane/transfer or hire car compared with driving. Incidentally there are a few good websites that will give you an idea of toll and fuel costs for specific journeys - Mappy isn't bad.
The tyranny of higher prices in school hols/half terms is another matter... Good luck! |

Hello Admin, looks like we're the only people thinking about skiing on this Wednesday night. Yes, think I might give Hemel a try. Went to Milton Keynes last year, horrible; also tried Manchester, which was impressive. Shame the Suffolk one got shelved, but I think the locals breathed a sigh of relief, it was a bit of a blot on the landscape.
Right: I'm off, few chores to do before lights out. |

I agree with Tony_H, not esp interested in the mountains as a summer hol.
Just come back from the Scilly Islands with the kids for half term, it was absolutely magical and am recommending it to anyone who will listen. Have gone a bit bonkers (or rather Mrs T has) sorting out future holidays: got Italy in the summer, skiing at Christmas, and even Easter next year sorted. Have a good summer everyone, and offer silent (or even vocal) prayers to whatever you believe in for a season like last year. |

Follow-up: they fit really well. I got some better soles in London and got them heatformed, they feel fantastic, and I saved 80 quid. Woo hoo. |

Incidentally, I had a look at solutions for feet; excellent, and my fave phrase was 'large calf situations'.

I was recommended a Fischer Progressor boot given the odd shape of my plates of meat (narrow heel, high arch, narrow forefoot) by a forthright chap in Snow & Rock Kensington. Unfort the only 28 left is in Birmingham; fortunately we are there this weekend to see friends, so I hope he's right.
I know it's a bit dumb to try on one boot and hope it fits; but it's either get this one at 40% off, or wait til they're all full price again come autumn... my cunning plan is to hope it's pretty close, do a shell fit, then bring it back to London and tweak the fit by having S&R do the time-honoured 'heat it and beat it' method and get a custom footbed done. Or, of course, it might just be a rubbish fit. |

We just came back from long weekend in Les Gets without the nippers and agree with Wickers - resorts around Geneva are a good idea - short transfer, easy slopes, good facilities. So may well be going back with young ones. And prices, cf New year trip to Val d'Isere, are sensible (ish).
We stayed at excellent La Marmotte hotel - but there are heaps of SC chalets and apartments. |
