Rediffusion too. I say bring 'em back, you buy a telly these days and it's obsolete before it's out of the box. Didn't you used to be able to rent washing machines and all kinds of stuff? |

I've recently done the same as you - young kids, first timers, first-timer (or nearly) wife.
Here are the things I think are indispensable wherever you go: 1. Short transfer from airport: that means places like Livigno are impractical. 2. Flexible child care: it's wonderful to spend time with the children skiing. But help with getting them ready/dropping off/picking up from ski school is a real blessing so you aren't stressed about it. 3. Good schools. MJy kids had two great instructors on their first time, and made huge leaps and bounds (sic). Second time was a disinterested and rather timid type who went through the motions with a big group, and was fiercely expensive. We couldn't move them because no space anywhere else. Once you've chosen yr destination seek personal recommendations for ski schools 4. Close proximity of hotel to accessible slope/lift. Unless you want to be carrying three or more sets of skis and poles for a nice long schlep. Getting on buses and suchlike is a PITA. There is such a huge choice that getting all these things in one place is by no means impossible. The problem with asking this group is that everyone has their little pet resorts - which is fine, but hardly objective. I'd get a ski guide, and spend an hour or so filtering down all the things you need from the holiday then doing a bit of research on one or two. EDIT: I see you've booked Niederau... I must go, it's been hyped on this site so much it sounds like skiing;s answer to the Holy Grail.. Cheers! |

Thanks Ian, good point... went to Val last year - looking fwd to less queuing this year!!
Thanks Bandit - the chalet runs folks across to those places if they want to, I think, but what you say above is what I hear - less busy=less queues=people visiting Val etc for the day then being glad to be back in Foy... |

Booked for Ste Foy. Still worried about lack of runs however...

Did first skiing with Son One last year, was fantastic... had to abort the first effort as I forgot to strongly advise he went for a pee before we left the top of the lift where the toilets were, so 15 minutes later he's desperate and 17 minutes later, and before I can get to him to help, he's got a steaming pair of salopettes... and it's -17 degrees... oops. Straight back to the hotel. Anyway no doubt lots more this year with both as they get more comfortable and confident, but they're still v young and need a fair bit of looking after. Hence my interest in the nanny-by-the-hour thing. |

Jon that is the kind of irresponsible post we can all do without; gaffer tape leaves behind sticky bits that are hard to get off, everyone knows you should use brown packing tape. |

burning thighs after about 30 to 40 mins of skiing

Can anyone tell me what are the best exercises to do before skiing to get the legs in shape? the trainers at my gym, who don't ski, all say one thing, the old-timers say 'squat against a wall', other say just pound out the miles on the bike... ideas?

Not sure if this is new, but it is new to me and I thought it worth passing on - Alpine Child Care. Basically, English (mostly) nannies you can hire by the hour or day, in-resort. Nice to see they didn't write any big cheques to branding consultants. Dunno the website right now and I'm on bath-time duty for the kids, so gotta run: Google the website.
As a parent who loves skiing with the kids, but finds the hour prior to their ski school painful and who occasionally wants to ski al day without the little darlings, I think this flexible service could be a winner. And no I'm not an owner. Mrs T and I will be looking it up in 2010/11 season; we've already booked with kidcare for Christmas this year!! Right, it's probly running over now, off we go.. |
