it's a shame we won't be skiing  We're down at the auberge nordique, I'm not too sure where that is but admin seemed to know. I'll PM you my mobile etc in case we can hook up for a beer one night.

What about signage? I know on the programme I watched they went round a ferry load of people with different road signs and noone had a clue what they were (including me!)

I think I saw that program or something similar, I think most years there's a campaign to try and make people a bit more aware and a bit more considerate when they cross the channel, obviously it's having mixed success

It wouldn't hurt if someone stood at the tunnel/ferry exit handing out a booklet with relevant rules and information though. Penalties are getting stiffer and likely to get even stiffer, there was some fuss here when the number of non-Swiss cars breaking various laws was released and I think that's fair, it's a particular frustration driving at peak times to make allowances for people ignoring various laws. That's not to say that in some areas of Switzerland the locals manage some pretty appalling driving

at the risk of sounding completely ignorant I always assumed it was because in hire shops you're standing on those holey mats which the tip would go through. may have become universal for this reason?

possibly  I suppose it's so we measure the contact length of the pole assuming the tip is fully in the snow, which probably isn't realistic

not really, I'm not entirely sure I agree with myself  it's no bad thing to have the pole slightly shorter IMHO

I never really got why we're supposed to flip the pole upside down really, for nordic walking you reckon that pole is held the normal way round and you're arm is slightly more than 90' or at angle where if water were running down your arm it would run off the ends of your fingers which seems a simpler idea. It's all a bit moot I think, poles are sold in 5cm graduations so you end up rounding up and down anyway.

For that matter, while I think about it, it's all a bit silly, unless you're deformed there's a series of ratios of heights and limb length which are set like the Vitruvian Man so you ought to work it from the height anyway. Or is that harder than just grabbing a pole?

are you sure? :?:  don't we make a correction for that fact ski boots and skis stack height is quite high (unless you're doing it in high heels)?

that's not a good idea, rules in European countries are often very different from the UK and large numbers of people get fined or worse each year as they find out the hard way they ought to have swotted up a little before leaving. Switzerland recently published figures for number of motorists fined and/or prosecuted and I see the UK made a great contribution although, IIRC, Croatia "won" which surprised me.

For example, did you know it was an offence to run out of petrol in Germany? Or that you mustn't move vehicles after an accident until after the police arrived? Or that you can get an on the spot fine for not having headlights on in a tunnel? Or using your car horn at some times? Or in some places it's compulsory to turn your engine off when waiting at lights or level crossings? Or that sticking the V's or using abusive language in Germany was an offence?
