Anything less than low light seems to defeat all quality.
North America for a large(ish) group?

Utah is certainly the more cost friendly region of the Western US. Lift tickets and accommodation are extremely reasonable compared to neighbouring Colorado.

Where did you end up deciding on?

Scotty's is good for a cheap feed - Like many of St Anton's restaurants, this pizza place starts with simple food and a few drinks before evolving into raucous revelry. A young crowd, plastic cups and pizza give you the inescapable feeling of being at a college house party.

Or the Krazy Kangaroo. The Yin to the Mooserwirt's Yan, this place is just as raucous, albeit slightly less notorious and with a slightly younger crowd. An equally fun on-mountain venue that should satisfy the need for a night out, and still be finished by 10pm.

And the Mooserwirt is unmissable. For anyone who subscribes to the pleasure of Apres Ski, a trip to the Mooserwirt is like arriving at Shangri-la. Probably the most famous Apres Ski venue in the world, the reputation that precedes this place is formidable. Fret not though, it is everything that the grapevine promises it to be. A visit usually proceeds as follows. Phase 1, a few relaxed beers while you enjoy the ambience and novelty of drinking half way up the mountain. Phase 2: start mingling with newfound friends of all nationalities. Phase 3: Quietly bop along to a combination of retro pop and German drinking anthems. Phase 4: Progress to dancing on tables and singing along with said German drinking songs. Phase 5: Start shedding snow gear to grind away in the inside sweat pit. Phase 6: 10pm, music off. Depending on level of sobriety, attempt to either ski/board/slide/fall down to the town. Phase 7: Try and fit in some skiing and do it all again the next day. A seriously fun place.

For a hotel in St Anton, investigate Chalet Rossana. As loathed as I am to promote such a culturally neglectful chalet, this place gets the budget traveller nod simply due to price. Although it does have the potential to be Britain in Austria, it is cheap, cheerful, well located, and the food is good.

St Anton.

Its easy to get a one-sided view of a resort whose name has become a synonym for Apres' Ski. In part, that's because this reputation for revelry is well deserved, and the Apres here is just so damn enjoyable. Feel like dancing on tables in bars half way up the mountain in full ski or snowboard garb? Yep. How about consuming extraordinary amounts of jagermeister and beer before skiing/snowboarding/sliding/falling back down to the village in the moonlight? Of course you do…

But beyond this, come to St Anton for the same reason that people have been for the past 100 years. To ski its broad range of challenging, and accessible slopes. St Anton sees itself as 'the cradle of Alpine skiing', and the homage to its impressive Alpine credentials is strong with signs and monuments erected throughout this picturesque little town. Its buildings are charming in a way that only the European Alps can be - like walking through the pages of a children's fairytale book.
