Pretty sure that's an urban myth...

What les flics most certainly do is park the radar/car where you can't see it (which is why most people are unaware of them), clock your speed as you pass and then radio your number through to their buddies who are waiting at the next peage - 5 or 10km ahead. The last peage before Calais, coming back, is a prime spot and you regularly see them there pulling cars from the queues.

On the spot fine, as Tony says, and if you haven't got the cash they escort you to the nearest cash machine - which can really spoil your day if you've been hooning up the autoroute to catch a particular train...

definitely an urban myth :D you need one of those gong/klaxon things they use on QI :D

The maths of it defeat the idea, to hold an average speed between two peage tolls over 130 kph would be amazing. I can cheat and know from the years we spent in Germany how hard it is, moving from around Heidelberg to the Swiss border travelling at 200 kph or more on unrestricted sections you'd struggle to ever average 120 kph. It's just a handy place to stop you without disrupting the traffic, then people without good French don't quite understand what's happened and that's the source of the story I would guess.
in fact, I'm giving them all 5 stars for effort :D
amazing  do they think that's a clever and sophisticated way to promote their product? hard to imagine how stupid they must think the reader would be to fall for it
Skiing down the fall line!!!

Barb&Sven wrote:I need some help.

I can hockey stop in either direction whilst heading down the fall line when I am not travelling too fast.

But as soon as I build up speed my brain flips into "I can't do it - I'm going too fast mode". This results in slight panic and thoughts of snow plough stops. I am travelling to Val di Fassa in two weeks and really want to crack this.

Can anyone give me any tips?

Thanks

don't hockey stop :D

carve your turns or at least skid them with a bit of shape letting the skis start to head uphill at the end of the turn, ie finish the turn. What most people do is grab the end of the turn instead of finishing it and the result is they accelerate a bit on each turn until they reach a speed they either have to stop at or lose control or, I suppose, lose control but carry on pretending they've not.

You've isolated the problem already, it's that picking up speed bit, you're not racing so unless you want to accelerate like you're going into a flat section then you shouldn't.

We ditched the car at the bottom of the hill and walked up. Didnt think it was worth it after a 4x4 audi was coming down sideways!

I'm not surprised, people in the UK place too much reliance on 4WD in snow. It seems every news report on the TV recently has been saying that the road is closed apart from 4WD. Some sort of maths problem I think :D 2 x no traction is just the same as 4 x no traction :D

Innsbruck Airport.

Do Easyjet go there? Their pilots are none too sure.
What is your favourite airport?

We get to go to some quite challenging and interesting places. Innsbruck in the Swiss Alps, Gilbraltar in Spain and Funchal in Madeira are the most rewarding – there are amazing views out the window

So there you go, getting a flying job bad geography needn't hold you back :D
