Am sure farmers have a similar contraption to that in photo which could result in that snow being collected in a following trailer and used to make piste base vs blown to side of road. Bet the guy even makes silage in summer.
Skiing after broken wrist????????
Started by User in Ski Chatter, 14 Replies
If plaster is off is technically not broken anymore so what is issue? Am not sure hurting your hand/wrist is something that happens when skiing (I have fallen in car park before :-( ), although perhaps a wrist guard and mittens would help. Mittens will prevent them holding ski pole too tight which is both not required and tiring. Of course standard practice of not using pole loops would help although using these is much more likely to result in a shoulder or pectoral injury than affect the wrist/hand.
Austria vs France

Have skied in both and have drawn a few conclusions.
In Austria you get to both drink more and sleep more. Apres ski culture is from the piste vs post midnight clubs in France. Austria Wins
More chips (fried ones)in Austria. France Wins
Many of the Austria ski resorts have low bases which for me is a great +ve, normal people, proper town. I would much prefer to catch a lift down to resort. Austria Wins
Both have amazing terrain and good snow records. You should look at what time of year you are going and plan accordingly. Score Draw

Definitely worth trying Austria especially if you are taking a car as so many options open up to you.
Austria wins, definitely worth a try.
Where is all the snow?

Just to cheer you up Whistler is having the worst start to season in living memory, very mild. Apparently great drinking weather.

Europe is doing fine, only 8 days to go until 2nd trip of season (shock horror first one I didn't get to ski), few days on piste will do everyone's technique some good. Who knows what the weather will bring but we should try and avoid being that brat kid incessantly asking for something. Yes Brits and Australians are the worlds famous moaners but is ultimately bad manners. In six months where can I sign up to listen to similar concerns about summer holiday being too hot?

So I leave you with some +ve thoughts for anyone heading from the UK or Australia
Better wine
Drinkable coffee
Edible bread
Improved food in general
Less English people moaning about weather although they are likely to be most vocal so difficult to completely block out.
Less poisonous things
Less likely to get sunburnt/sun cancer; panda eyes are a possibility.

If no snow comes alternate activities are. Walking, talking (skiing is actually a great way to spend long hours in company of people with minimal conversation, very popular with married couples or those with kids), sledging, generally enjoying outdoors. Take a computer console away from a kid and they revert to enjoying simple pleasures in life. Take snow away from a skier and they appreciate the mountains, the town and the people. Swap you ski lesson for a language lesson, cooking lesson etc etc.

And finally the weather Gods care if you dropped some money on flights. They didn't send out bank details so the bribe was never received. Fortunately I was both a good boy and sent a letter to Santa, so anyone heading to Chamonix is more than welcome to join for both the skiing and the simple pleasures of a great town from the 21st.

Situation in N French Alps is as follows:
1) Freezing level has since Friday been down to 1000m and importantly only a few degree above during day
2) Next week cold with dusting of snow
3) Following week looks like plenty of snow

I am predicting N France will fully open as planned with 1M + of snow on 20th of December. Long term forecast looks promising over Christmas-NY period.

Talk in town is of how we now have a stable base which is so important is so important
to maximize the season. Current situation is therefore as per plan and historical norm.
1) As per above don't ski with partner, as will ruin holiday for both of you.
2) If you don't already; take up a sport or do some form of group exercise class as this will give you confidence, and control of your body.
3) If you really don't enjoy it then why ski? Snow shoeing, cross country skiing, walking, swimming, indoor climbing, spa, gym etc. Just enjoy the buzz of being in a ski town, each much better food than on the mountain and relax. I spent a whole season injured and didn't really miss skiing as knew my body wasn't ready, did however enjoy scenery, coffee and croissants. If skiing is your square peg and is actually ruining your holiday then I would just not bother.
Apart from the ridiculous transfer to Livigno have to say was not very impressed with the resort. Hence more famous for duty status than actual skiing. Cervinia is one of best resorts in Alps, something for everyone. Is mainly South facing though so better to get up early and make best of snow conditions.
