Hi,
An idea for a slightly skiing related thread, inspired from a previous answer of mine.....If you could strap the idiot in Number 10 and his incompetent ccabinet onto a sledge and shove them off down a ski run.....which run would you choose..? :  The flying kilometre in Les Arcs perhaps or the mogul field from the top of the Mont Fort cable car maybe? Hi,
With regards to the Les Arcs option , you're friend is correct in one respect...if you stay in resort you will often find prices are slightly higher than somewhere just down the road( the captive audience thing). If you are thinking of Les Arcs it would be cheaper to stay down in Bourg-Saint-Maurice and use the funicular to get up to Les Arcs 1600 to access the white stuff, the supermarkets are much cheaper than in resort and the town has some of the best restaurants in the Tarentaise,at very reasonable prices ( 3 - 4 course meals from 14euro's to 40euro's depending on where you eat). Other resorts i can reccommend are Serre Chevalierre (Ski Miquel are a good catered chalet company to use) and La Rosiere. For good deals look to book somewhere after Easter as a lot of tour operators have it in their heads that the season finishes after the holiday when in fact some resorts do not finish until late April or Early May (Les Arcs last skiable day 25th April ,Val D'isere & Tignes 6th May 2009). All the best, Jon. |

:DHi ,
To reach the skiing resorts in th french alps will take around 8 - 12 hours from Calais depending on which you go to,weather and traffic included also, another option to look at may be using the Eurostar to either Moutiers or Bourg-Saint-Maurice, this would give you access to resorts such as the Trois Vallee's (Meribel , Courcheval ,Val Thorens ),La Plagne ,Les Arcs ,La Rosiere, Val D'isere and Tignes. I have left out Sainte-Foy as if you don't ski there is nothing to do ,also somewhere such as BsM itself can be an ideal spot as for days off there are excellent restaurants ,shops ,large supermarkets plus a market up the main shopping street on saturdays etc,and from there you could also take a day trip to somewhere such as Albertville and Lake Annecy via car or bus. Driving down to the alps is pretty straight forward as the french motorway system is excellent and well signposted. Another resort i can think of which is relatively easy to get to via Chamonix by car is Courmayeur in Italy ,it has a lovely town with great shops cafe's and places to eat. Jon. |

:DWell done Chemmy Alcott 17th position in the Womens Super Combined in Val,some may smirk at this position but for a British skier this is a fantasic result compared to the funding ,training ski nations give their skiers....(also being born with skies on helps...ouch!). :D

Hi,
No worries ,you should be able to pick up a shuttle bus in Les Arcs ,or fail in that there is a shuttle bus that can be found at the train/bus station in Bourg-Saint-Maurice. The small shuttle buses are white with yellow/blue writing ,also autocars-martin make the trip aswell, they to can be found at the train/bus station in BsM. The Ste-Foy tourist info link is below. http://www.saintefoy-tarentaise.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=192&Itemid=164 Many Regards Jon. |
