Dolomites - Arabba or Moena

Have now booked in Moena. Will be using skibus so hope it is well connected into the overall area. The ski area in the immediate vicinity seems small so I would hope to be able to get onto the Sella Ronda or connect to other larger ski areas without too much bus time.

.... after all that you decide to go somewhere else :x

Still an interesting debate and highlights the very different perspectives that people have about their favourite resorts, often based on a small number of visits. While Soll is certainly low, it really manages the snow well and I have never had a problem apart from the final stretch of the home run on occasions. As somebody highlighted, the home run at peak descent time can be a real mess with difficult conditions and too many people, many of whom should not be on the run at all  We usually avoid the rush by leaving it as late as possible.

As for St Anton,, it is a great resort but accommodation tends to be pretty expensive. You also have to be a bit careful where the accommodation is located. It is a big resort and some of the accommodation can be a bit out of the way and not very convenient.

I haven't been to Mayrhofen (yet  ) so my comments are about Soll and am unable to compare.

Soll has a huge area with plenty of well connected runs and plenty of variety to keep you happy. The only downside is that many of the runs are fairly short. While it is low, the snow is very well maintained with plenty of snowmaking to ensure conditions are kept in good shape. The "local" pass includes Westendorf and that area is worth a day. I haven't skied over to Kitzbuel. It is possible on the extended pass but I suspect the effort of making the journey is not really worth it,

Apres ski is very good. The Moonlight bar at the bottom of the piste is great fun immediately after the skiing, especially around the weekend when all the Germans come down from Munich and other cities on day trips. Lots of heaving bodies and catchy Europop. The main village has plenty of lively pubs with live music to be found somewhere most nights. The Whiskey Muhle is still going strong for late night activity, though it does tend to be very young - think late teens/early twenties.

A few decent restaurants around as well if you are not staying in a catered property.

Currently planning my main trip for February. Looking at heading to Hotel Cesa Padon outside Arabba or Hotel Fanes in Moena.

Finding it a bit difficult to get hard info on location of lifts, ease of access to snow, etc. Would welcome any info that people can offer and any views on which area would be most convenient. I am travelling with the kids, 12 and 10 - they would probably be classed as intermediates but possibly at the lower end of the scale.
What are the FIVE most common ski injuries?

In no particular order, I would guess:

1. Concussion

2. Knee ligaments

3. Sprained/broken thumb

4. Collar bone/shoulder break

5. Sprained/broken wrist.
Piste Bashing

This is the whole point of skiing that you get to ski many different conditions during the day, from fresh and slightly icy cordiroy to soft moguls. Plus bashers on slopes will only contribute to hazard.

I think there are regulations that severely restrict the use of piste bashers on open pistes in France. The rules in Austrian appear to be more flexible.

But it is interesting that all the complaints appear to be about France. People seem to be happier that the Austrians are striking a better balance :!:.

I was in La Plagne this year for the 1st week of January. We had nearly 1 metre of snow overnight on the Thursday. Friday was a beautiful sunny morning and while I fully understand that there would have been severe avalanche concerns, it seemed to me that they were slow to clear the snow from runs and get a reasonable bit of the resort open. I suspect that they were not too bothered beecause it was the end of that week and the following week would have been very quiet.

That may be understandable but it does nothing to make skiers want to return
