Ski Holiday Soon? Use e-mail? PLEASE READ THIS!

If you're heading off on holiday soon, and are likely to use an Out-of-Office facility, or autoresponder, to reply to e-mails in your absence - please, please, please be careful what you include.

Every time we send out our Snow Report e-mails, we get a few hundred "Out-of-Office" replies back to us.

Some of these contain a lot of personal information. Regularly we will be told :-

- The exact dates that someone will be on holiday.
- Who we should call in their absence (names and numbers).
- Details of Teams and Project structures.
- Personal e-mails by which people can be contacted instead.
- Personal mobile and landline numbers.

We've even had a few where we're asked to post hard-copy to a personal address!

Now that information is safe with us (we rapidly delete them) but those Out-of-Office replies will be going out to every scammer who manages to get a dodgy e-mail past your spam filters (you do use spam filtering software don't you???).

Be careful with your identity! Once it's out there it's out of your control.

Hi, Prosneige give a 5% discount on Group Lessons for j2ski-ers and have instructors with good English skills.

There is a little more information, and the pricing for Private Instruction on our page for Val Thorens Ski Schools, and of course on the prosneige website.

Please let us (j2ski) know how you get on - partnerships with ski schools is one area we're looking at for the future.
Someone else who hasn't been there lately... ...but after you've tried those other sites :P you could look here:-

Alta Badia Snow Report
Alta Badia Webcams
San Cassiano Snow Forecast

We have got a few gaps but we should improve our snow reports from the Dolomites over the next few weeks.

Is it... Bulgaria?
John, whatever you do, don't give up!

Learning to ski is hard work, but the rewards are immense - amongst other things it will give you an incentive to stay fit and active for another 50 years, besides just being fun!

Your skis are making it much too difficult for you, as has been said, and you should consign them to your garage immediately. End of.

Learning to ski is hard work - so make it easier; modern, shorter, easier-to-ski skis will help hugely. Comfortable boots and warm, dry clothing and gloves are all essentials when learning; tick them all off and then you can concentrate on your skiing without distraction. And Bandit's suggestion of 1-on-1 lessons is also essential.

You evidently think you have a strong-side and a weak-side (most of us do). It's important to let an expert assess you and give you appropriate exercises for your individual level of fitness, agility and confidence - so that all those aspects can develop along with your skiing. You will progress faster than you think.

Now the school holidays are over, the slopes should be much less crowded for the next few weeks (until half-term) so get out there (with your easy new hire skis) and get some snow-time. If you're able, take some time during the week when the place is empty.

Find a quiet, easy run with an easy lift and just go round and round - get to know the run, take different routes, play around a bit... breath the mountain air, take in the views, relax a little. It will come to you. 8)

1950 - some of the best piste skiing in the world passes your door (well, almost).

 ...nah, just keeping it to myself..

But you're right - some great steeps up there (IIRC). Memories of a wild day after yomping up and dropping over the back of the Col with some of the Optimum peeps too. Needed new underwear after that one...

Once or twice...

Les Arcs is a simply fantastic ski area. I get the impression you've got a few miles under your skis, so I reckon you'll love it.

It has one of the biggest verticals in The Alps; from the Aiguille Rouge down to Villaroger, Black and Red, drops you 2000m over a distance of about 8-10km (I think!). Not too difficult but will burn the thighs!

There are serious Blacks, long Blues and Reds and a lot of off-piste available (exercise care as always).

Highlights? Most all of the 1950/2000 valley, on and off the piste... pretty runs among the trees over at Peisey / Vallandry, Bois de l'ours, Genepi and Comborciere Blacks, blasting on the long fast Blues of 1600, and lunch at Le Ferme in Villaroger.

And possibly the most bizarre run in the Alps (assuming they haven't yet sanitized it); from the top of the Comborciere chair, take the Malgovert (also known as "The Hobbit" to veterans of Optimumski) toward 1600. Marked as a red but wouldn't be a marked run anywhere else. If you can link two turns without falling or giggling you're doing well...

Oh, and don't miss the "tart huts"; about half a dozen shacks around the mountain that serve a range of savoury and sweet flans and tarts - great for snacking on the run and sitting on your skis in the sun...

Hmm, now I've written that I want to be there...

Hi there, welcome to j2ski; you're in the right place :-

Here is a Map of Ski Resorts near Stuttgart.

I don't know much about the local resorts (sorry), but 2-3 hours drive will get you into Switzerland or Austria - with a big choice of good skiing.
