Ok, there is certainly skiing/boarding to suit you all in Chamonix but it's probably not going to be in the same part of the valley.
So, TBH, you will get more out of Chamonix if you get a few more weeks under your boards first. If your friends are happy with Mayrhofen that may be better for you right now. But put Chamonix high on your "must ski/board" list for the future... something to aim for. 8) |

Hi, my name's Victor Meldrew and I'm having some really negative experiences with spammers lately... As Ross's comment was so amusing I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt if... a) you contribute something useful to the forum, and b) you are good looking. Over to you... |

You need to tell us what you're looking for and what level of skier/boarder/drinker you are. Chamonix gives access to some of the finest skiing on the planet - without question - for capable skiers, and has a reputation as a party town. If either of those aspects are important to you then it's hard to beat. If you want a compact or interlinked ski area, ski-in/out, runs for a mixed ability group to play together on... and/or are on a tight budget, then Chamonix's not going to be top of your list (Mayrhofen may be, but I've not skiied there). Tell us more about you... |

You can save a lot of money by staying out of resort, particularly for the Easter week. I guess night life isn't a great concern so how about looking for an apartment in Bourg St. Maurice? Cheaper than staying in resort, proper supermarkets with valley prices instead of resort and just 10 minutes ride up the funicular into Les Arcs each day. Sorted.

Now I really feel inadequate (thanks Dave Mac)...
I've skiied all these years being insufficiently aware of the square of my velocity... 8) (sounds like something Ian Dury could have written). But back to tomski - the correct length poles will be the ones that feel just right for you. bandit's described the traditional way of estimating pole length - although I think modern skis/technique benefit from a slightly shorter pole. I'm 5'11 and used to ski with 125cm poles when on skinny skis, but now find closer to 120cm are right. As bandit says, adjustables are your best bet if you're not sure. Most hire shops have adjustables available nowadays so worth hiring a pair for a few days to play around with the length. |

Ooooooooooooooooooooooo 8)
Next Week Caveat - the forecast change is still a few days away yet, and hence may change considerably over the next few days. However... From Monday or Tuesday next week, temperatures look likely to drop significantly across the majority of the alpine region. The forecast models are indicating a high probability of precipitation coincident with that temperature change - and for those developments to dominate the latter half of next week. In other words, it's very probably going to snow. Improved and Extended Snow Reports... coming soon Expect to see the earlier opening resorts to start reporting during November, perhaps before, and look out for an extended and improved Snow Report coverage on J2Ski... Enjoy... |
