No. You forgot to divide by the number you first thought of, and to add your favourite colour. Anyway - how did you figure out our new forecast model so quickly? 8) |

Good point Dave... even without the effect of the sun, it's worth noting that different orientations will receive markedly different snow accumulations, and hence have very different snow layers, if the snowfall is accompanied by even the slightest wind. But I think that's the closest we can get for now... |

We don't (yet!) cover Hopfgarten, but the Snow Report for Westendorf is pretty close and should give you a good idea of conditions (the report will be updated more regularly as the opening day approaches).
Hope that helps, |

Hi John, feedback is all welcome - especially when we get it wrong. Are you based in Ellmau? It would be useful to have your feedback later in the season to see if you notice any improvement... From the webcams it does look as if our forecast for today of "Fair" is closer to reality than the local forecast (of "very cloudy") currently on the official TO website... We've invested a lot of time and effort in analysing and improving our forecasts over the summer, and we'll shortly switch (at some expense) to a higher-grade (higher resolution) data source for most of our forecasts. We've already rolled out changes to our calculations that should result in more conservative snowfall estimates for lower altitudes in particular. That said, long-range mountain forecasts are - for the foreseeable future - never going to be 100% reliable for all the reasons discussed earlier in this thread. Our forecast snow depths can, similarly, never be more than rough averages due to the extreme variations in falls from one part of a mountain to another; variations caused by subtle changes in any and all of wind, temperature, humidity, etc. and topography. But we do our best... 8) As for the current snow report - that's evidently incorrect and I will feed that back to our data provider today. We hope to complete the roll out of our improved forecasts late this week, and I'll post a note to that effect when we do. |

Ok folks this has got a bit too heated, so I've removed the personal comments and locked the thread.
We certainly have a good range of opinions, eloquently expressed, here so thank you to all who have contributed to this subject - whatever side of the fence you sit. I think we've covered it well from different viewpoints so let's move on, stay on-topic and... play nicely... 8) |

Weather and Snow Next Week
Temperatures across the European Alps will be close to the seasonal averages, with cooling around mid-week coinciding with a band of precipitation. The exact extent of the weather system is unclear as yet but many areas should see snow down to around 2,000 metres on Tuesday and/or Wednesday. Coming Soon Keep an eye on the J2Ski forum for the rest of this month; we'll be announcing some enhancements to our snow forecasting, some extra discounts on Ski Hire and some all-new options to help you hire the right ski for your style and budget. And to help you make your Pounds and Euros go further, we'll be highlighting an increasing range of last minute discounts and early-bird offers on chalets, apartments and package deals. Jolly good... |

YEAH BABY!!! ROCK AND ROLL! 8) 8) 8) 8) Oh sorry, that wasn't very admin-like was it? Er, splendid. Jolly good. That's seriously good news... personally I'd take his advice to the letter and treat the sneaky weekend as a confidence-building exercise; get yourself to an alpine hotel with a spa, chill out, get pampered and do some half days, easy skiing so it all feels just right and you don't feel like you're overdoing it. 8) Job done. Caron-a's back on the piste... |

Dave Mac is in fact James Bond. He has for some reason not mentioned that his glider was being shot down behind enemy lines, and he made his escape in an Aston Martin with a Heidi lookalike at his side... or was that Tino?
I claim my five pounds. |
