A ski with a sidecut can be made to carve. Twenty years ago the ability to carve was a real milestone in the development of a skier - and it took effort, patience and (almost invariably) instruction to achieve. But it certainly wasn't impossible. Just because carving comes in the box with the skis nowadays doesn't mean it didn't happen back then... 8) As a "graduate" of the same ski school as bandit, I can tell you that there were plenty of European skiers on top of their carves. Set yourself a challenge Mr T - grab some skinnies off eBay (an old style SL ski will make it easier) and commit some time to them. Might take some effort... ...but they'll carve. Judge for yourself. 8) I'm all misty-eyed with memories of my first linked carves; riding Dynastar Courses (GS or SL) at something approaching light-speed down the Mont Blanc (Blue) run in Arc 1600/1800, strung out behind crazy Phil... happy days... |

And, of course, comparison of "nasal stalactites" makes for great conversation during the coffee stops on cold days... the combination of a full beard and a streaming head cold is always a winner... 8) |

Not sure about -30C but, yes, it does look likely to be seriously cold this weekend and again around the middle of next week.
Most of the Northern / Central Alps ski resorts will have a couple of days with maximum temperatures well below freezing; max temp of -10C to -15C will be common, and colder spots (avoid chairlifts in shadow if you can!!!) will be looking at -20C, maybe beyond. So, yes, good base layers, warm top layers (lots), good (very good!) gloves, glove inners and hand-warmers if your hands get cold), get a buff / face protector... and plenty of stops for hot chocolate! 8) In fact, it may even get cold enough for Ross to put a shirt on... |

Snow Forecast Summary - January 1st 2009

For our first summary of 2009, we're delighted to report that many parts of The Alps received a decent fall of snow last night.
Weather and Snow Next Week The next few days are unlikely to see much snow falling in Europe, although widespread falls are looking quite possible for the middle of next week - more on that as the forecasts develop. The dominant feature of the weather for the next week, however, is going to be quite a dip in temperatures. Particularly over the coming weekend, temperatures look likely to drop 10-15 degrees (C) below their current (relatively normal) levels, possibly more. North, East and Central Alps will be coolest and some localised areas could get very cold indeed. If you're heading out this weekend you should have good conditions but it will be cold - layer up and make sure your gloves are good. On the plus side, you should get some sunshine and the snow will keep well... but do wrap up. We'll be back with an update at the beginning of next week as the forecast models are still un-clear beyond the next seven days, but looking like they might get interesting... |

I think we'll ice this one folks.
Whatever the circumstances of this tragedy, "there but for the grace of God". Be careful out there. |

Really??? I'd rather drink neat vodka. No, really, I would... 8) |

Yeeeuuuuuckk... does have its uses though. The one and only time my wife has ever bought or drunk Irn Bru was just under three years ago - she came in from shopping, said "dunno why, but I really fancied this". I took one look and said "you're pregnant". He's two now. 8) Cure for a hangover? Try a two-year-old demanding his breakfast at dawn... |
