So there's at least 10cm of snow here in Bristol and still falling. Accepting that skiing anything rocky will ruin my skis how much snow do you need to ski on a grassy slope?
Anyone going out? Any suggestions for particularly good hills around north bristol? |

+1 for ski tracks
GPS only and local data saving = no running cost. Run by run breakdown in the 69p version - well worth it. With data off I've had over 50% battery left at the end of the day (on an iphone!) Not skiing specific but Photosynth is free and good for capturing the views! Alpine replay looks like it could be good, might investigate. |

I cycle and wouldn't consider riding to the shop without a helmet, I ski faster than I can ride but never really thought about a helmet until the last year or two.

I know this has been done to death but thought I'd add a few of my observations as I haven't before!
After 7 years of happily skiing without a helmet this year I jumped ship and brought a helmet, why – mainly because I was planning more off-piste and it would keep the OH happy. I'll just wear it for the off-piste days I thought. I went with (esf) off piste lessons in the morning and all but one turned up with helmets including the instructor. There was one French dude with an old school bobble, until the last day when even he turned up in a shiny new helmet! On wearing a helmet – wow – never cold despite -20C temps, never too hot either, so light I'd forget I was wearing if it wasn't for the constant pleasure of warm ears, hearing at least as good as through the layers of hats/ear warmers that would have been required – bare ears not an option last week! I don't think I skied any different – always been more concerned about breaking arm/legs but not much you can do about that. Overall despite initial scepticism I'm a full convert, didn't take it off all week and doubt I'll ever ski without it again. The only down side is the initial extra cost, now that's over I can't suggest a reason not to wear it. I don't want to see compulsory helmets but I'd certainly highly recommend to anyone! |

Went there on my first ever ski trip 7 years ago. Really nice little village as long as you are confident/fast enough not to worry about having to ski over the hill to access the main ski area. Don't remember much more about it but had a great holiday!

Back on topic!
I brought my first set of skis this year. Went for Rossi S3 from last season. Read lots of reviews that said they were great all round skis as I wanted almost exactly the same as you. Cost £300 new. I know I should have tried lots out but didn't! Have been very happy with them only thing i haven't skied is bad ice but everything else very good. |

Brilliant, even if it's likely to be very expensive.
