After 19 years of the Mondial Du Snowboard, the huge annual October opening party staged by glacier-ski resort Les 2 Alpes, the leading French centre has announced an all new celebration of the start-of-the-season this October.

The new Rock Of Snowboard Tour will feature many of the same successful elements of new season equipment testing and a great party atmosphere, with some new ideas as well. It will be staged on October 24th and 25th, 2009 on the glacier at 3200metres. The glacier remains open to Sunday 1st November.

Along with the manufacturers, journalists from the French media Snowsorf and Snowtime will also be there to suggest "what and how" to test the snowboards.

The tests will be accompanied with an international amateur competition, 'Rider Hero'staged in the resort's snowpark. There will also be a video contest "rec your band", and a prize for the best tricks "Rail Guitar".

Oh, and we only "fly" to Le Grand Bornand...

Were you expecting to fly Sir? Mr Wickers has decided he's bloody well driving again... but you can take an extra item of luggage on his roof.
Squaw Valley's High Camp double chair is being upgraded to a triple chairlift this winter. The new High Camp Triple Chairlift improves access to the multiple terrain parks and also to the High Camp area's extensive beginner terrain, restaurants, ice skating rink, Lagoon and Spa, and Olympic Museum.

In the years following the 1960 Winter Olympics, Cushing's resort and the surrounding communities experienced a period of dramatic growth. In 1963 Squaw Valley built its first gondola, and, later, in 1969, installed North America's largest aerial cable car. In 1985, the resort constructed the first of several state-of-the-art, high-speed, detachable quad chairlifts. Today, Squaw Valley boasts one of the most advanced lift network in the world with Squaw's world-famous KT-22 ranking #1 among North American lifts year after year. Squaw Valley's standard of lift network superiority is evident in its annual improvements. In summer 2009 the old double chair-High Camp Lift was removed to make way for the new High Camp Triple Chairlift.

Over the past seasons, the Monster Park at Riviera has seen a huge expansion. Providing access to the Ford Belmont Park, the Riviera Superpipe, and the numerous jump lines and jib features of the Central Park and High Camp Rail Yard, the High Camp Chair has become the hub for park riders of all tastes and abilities.

In addition, Squaw Valley's snowmaking department spent summer 2009 continuing a multi year vast overhaul of the resort's existing snowmaking system. Most notable are the addition of a three mile pipe line to more efficiently transfer water from storage ponds to the snowmaking building and a new 1200 horsepower air compressor that doubles Squaw Valley's snowmaking capability.

Mountain Riders Clean 30 Tonnes Of Waste From 55 Resorts In France And UK

The Mountain Riders environmental group has issued a report on its annual spring cleaning activities across French and now British ski areas and note that 3,500 volunteers turned out to clean up the slopes of 55 participating ski resorts collecting in total 30 tonnes of waste from the ski slopes, 56% of it recyclable, 57% of it left by tourists.

"Once again, volunteers responded to our annual call to keep our mountains clean and showed up in force for the annual spring-cleaning sessions organised in the Alps, the Pyrenees, the Vosges, the Massif Central and also in the UK with the Ski Club of Great-Britain. Many thanks go not only to these volunteers, but also to those who organised these positive actions." said Stewart Sheppard of Mountain Riders.

The number of volunteers was up by 1000 on last winter which Mountain Riders believe is clear proof that raising awareness is key in getting people involved.
The amount of waste collected was nearly doubles last years total of 17 tonnes with rubbish collectors still finding large amounts of older pieces of rubbish in and around the resorts and on the slopes.

As always, this year's spring clean yielded an interesting combination of rubbish, including cans, plastic wrappers, single-use products, bottles, paper, batteries, metal and cables, PET bottles and the ever-present cigarette butts.

The sheer quantity of cigarette butts received special mention in the report with up to 30 000 cigarette butts can be found under just one chairlift.

The idea of Mountain Riders' campaign is both to clean up the slopes and raise awareness of the harm littering does with the aim of ensuring that leaving rubbish on the slopes becomes a thing of the past.

"It is vital for everybody to bring their own rubbish back down from the mountains then take their rubbish to the closest sorting bins." Said Mr Sheppard.
"To take things further, we can all try to choose products supplied in packaging that can be easily re-used or recycled and where possible products that have little or no packaging at all."
