Get thee to Starski up in Chinaillon and ask for an "off piste" afternoon with Bastien... ...the steeps off the back (North face) of Le Lachat are an amazing place to have a "lesson". The lesson began with kicking a gap in a cornice... I was way out of my comfort zone but once I'd stopped hyperventilating, and got down the first pitch ok, had a blast. With a half decent instructor you can learn more in an afternoon 1-to-1 than you would in a week of standard group lessons. I think the instructors doing private lessons will usually be among the best at any school too. |

The advanced skier will relish the challenges at 'cote 2000', and for the expert there is easily accessible backcountry and a great area for freeride and steeps on Mont Joly. These are just a snippet of what's actually available, for everyone the panoramic scenery of Mt Blanc and the evasion area is simply breathtaking, as are the renowned gastronomic delights of the restaurants of Megeve. BASS Megeve is part of the bigger BASS Network that now has Snowsport schools operating in Chamonix, Courchevel, Chatel, Les Gets, Meribel, Morzine, Tignes, Val D'isere and St Moritz. The first Les Arcs European Film Festival will be staged from December 5th-12th, right at the start of winter, but with ski runs up to 3200 metres and extensive snow making, there should still be plenty of snow to enjoy when you're not catching a movie.
Les Arcs is actually treating itself to a slightly earlier-than-usual opening under this banner of European culture. With more than 50 feature films being shown on the resort's eight screens, including previews of four major European films, this is a unique opportunity to try the first snow while enjoying an ambitious and daring film festival. More than 400 guests from the world of cinema - including actors, directors, producers and journalists - will be attending the event. The Film Festival Special offer is available for short stays of four days/three nights and costs only €11 per person, per day based on four people sharing a studio apartment. Other special rates are available for other group sizes. Info: +33 (0)4 79 07 12 57 or www.lesarcs.com Paradiski area in the Savoie region of the French Alps offers 425km of runs throughout Les Arcs-Peisey-Vallandry-La Plagne. Hosting 20 resorts, it offers the most diverse ski area in Europe and boasts the world's most prestigious cable car, the Vanoise Express, which can hold 200 people in each of its two double-decker cars. |

That's possibly true, especially as a beginner - but we all struggle then and maybe skiing will turn out to be "his thing"? Encourage him to give it a go anyway; if he gets the bug then it'll do wonders for his fitness in the long run. And tell him, "yes, big people can ski"! Gravity becomes your best friend. 8) |

One man's easy Red is another man's scary Black... 8) ...though I don't recall encountering any problems with run gradings in Tignes and have skied there quite a few times. It's not a great place for absolute beginners unless you're staying right by one of the few (and far between) Greens but anyone from early Intermediate up will enjoy. It is one of Europe's great ski areas, and you can be pretty sure of good snow coverage. Take a few days to find your way around with the piste map and you'll be fine. If your group is happy on Blues and Reds I can't see you having any major probs with Tignes Red runs - or with getting around the area generally. If Alpine Elements do any form of ski hosting then they should be able to ski with you and get a feel for how you might get on with some of the Blacks. Go for it! 8) |
