...but only two real ones... 8) Folk with (commercial) interests in particular resorts are welcome to post information and respond to relevant queries, but the forum is for discussion not advertising (as Ian says, we can do that too - just not in here). austrian-adventures has it about right, so that's fine. Anyway, back on-topic please peeps... and remember you don't have to quote the entire message you're replying to as that just duplicates the info in the thread. |

Actually, Glyn, you're better off asking here I think! That list is ridiculous... what sort of a skier is going to be flipping a coin to choose between St Anton (#2) and Borovets (#3)? ...back to the OP... for a birthday bash you'll want somewhere pleasant and with good skiing for your level. If you're looking at early March then how about the Dolomites? Doing the Sella Ronda would make a great birthday out on the slopes and prices are reasonable. Also, maybe La Clusaz (search past threads - but nice village, good skiing and 45 minute transfer from Geneva - with the added attraction of maybe bumping into Wickers!). |

Hey jobster, good to see you back with some progress... sounds very encouraging.
I would think you'll be fine in just about any major resort, or a decent-sized town nearby. JonG should be able to confirm but I'd imagine Bourg St Maurice to be very well equipped medically. If you're concerned about altitude you could stay in the town and ride the funicular up to Les Arcs to ski. Similarly maybe stay somewhere like Annecy or Briancon that are close enough to resorts for easy day trips? Definitely have that conversation (re. altitude) with the doctors though. |

One of the ski world's largest summer construction projects this summer is at the leading Slovak resort of Jasna where a major new gondola project is under construction.
The new Grand Brhliska gondola is nearly 2km long and rises 320 vertical metres between 1100 and 1420m. It replaces an older four-passengers-per-cabin lift, the new eight passenger cabins give the lift a maximum capacity of 2,400 skiers per hour – double that of the lift it replaces. It is also 328m longer than the previous lift. Work on the new 13 million Euro lift began in May and will be complete for the coming winter. It's base station is close to the grand hotel and the lift has a stylish modern design with orange window panes and black frames creating a unique colour combination. As part of the construction project, Jasna is also lengthening of the ski slope Nr 10 Vrbicka (350m) to 2,3km long, with full snow making cover, so that the ski slope will end at the bottom station of the cableway. The access road to hotels will now lead under the ski slope through a new tunnel and the resorts Biela Pú? and Otupné will be linked by the lower parts of the ski slopes Biela Pú? and Vrbická. There will also be a completely new 700m long ski slope in the Otupné sector, which will be located to the east of the ski run Vrbická. The new run will provide a bypass to a steep part of the Vrbická piste. www.jasna.sk |

Although it is too early to say exactly how much Brits can expect to pay in the Alps this winter, the recent gains of the pound against the Euro and the Swiss Franc means that even modest increases in resort are offset, compared to winter 08-09, even though it currently remains weaker than 18 months ago in winter 07-08.
For example at current exchange rates a six day adult pass for the giant 4 Valleys area of Switzerland, which would have cost around GBP 208 in February this year, currently costs GBP 196, a drop of nearly 7 percent. A number of Ski Resorts are also offering discounts if lift tickets are purchased in advance online, so skiers who have already decided when and where they're going to ski this winter should consider pre-booking and check if anything is available at their chosen resort. Some of these offers have cut-off dates in the autumn. On the other hand if the pound does continue to regain lost ground and increase in strength, waiting to closer to the season may be a good option. Tour operators also have many offers available for the most price conscious skiers including all in inclusive holidays with the cost of lift tickets and rentals built in at some resorts on fixed dates together with other deals such asw free lift tickets at some resorts. If anything, savings in North America compared to last winter are greater still. Courtesy of and © Snow24 plc |

Saalbach is making one of the biggest ever investments in a chairlift this summer to upgrade the Hasenauerköpfl from a quad chair to a state of the art eight seater chairlift with pull down bubble weather-protection covers. The 7m Euro lift will also have heated seats.
The new lift is one of three the resort, one of Austria's largest and most popular, is installing ahead of winter 2009-10. A further 5m Euros is being spent on a six-seater chairlift with orange panorama bubbles, heated seats and safety loops to replace the Turmlift. Finally 1,.4m Euros is being spent on upgrading the Almlift, formerly a T-bar, in linked Leogang, to a quad chair. Saalbach is also making on-going investments in snowmaking which covers 90% of its 200km of slopes which are served by 55 modern cable-ways and lifts. The resort also boasts 10km of cross-country tracks , a carving funpark, half pipes, GS race courses, flood-lit slope, mogul runs and snow parks. Courtesy of and © Snow24 plc |

Ok, Thursday it is then... but some of us will almost certainly be around on the Wednesday and the Friday too if anyone fancies a "mini meet" on those days (no promises yet though).
