Morzine at 1/2 term?
Started by User in France, 18 Replies
Hi Frostbite,
I think the main problem this Feb half-term will be finding anywhere at all! Apparently everyone has the same week for half-term, plus Easter is late so more people will probably be looking to go at half-term.

The cheapest half-board holidays with flights for this week that I could find are about £900- per adult.

If you want somewhere quiet I'd suggest a small satellite village of a larger ski area, to cater for the good skiers in your family as well as your wife.

If you could be more specific about your requirements I'm sure more people will come along to help you. Like, for example, do you want a chalet, hotel, or self-catering? And does it have to be France? Are you flying, driving, or going by train?

Unfortunately I strongly suspect that the busiest ski resorts will be those easiest to get to from the U.K. because they're available as a package holiday with flights. Most people don't seem prepared to do the legwork involved in booking a DIY holiday.

There are plenty of quiet French ski resorts around but you'll probably have to go DIY to get to them. For example, a friend of mine went to Praz-sur-Arly and she said it was really lovely and practically empty. And it's close to Megeve. But I don't think the major British tour operators go there.

Sorry I can't help more. We always seem to go to the major busy resorts ourselves.

Morzine at 1/2 term?

Frostbite,
I've never been there, but the Ski club of Great Britain says that it's a great place but 'extremely busy during February'.

When we were at Courchevel during Feb half-term, we found that the blue and green slopes were also 'extremely busy' but that the red and black ones were pretty empty. I don't know if this applies to Morzine as well, but it might do. In which case whether Morzine is too busy for you and your family might depend on what level of skiers you all are.

What price is the deal you've been offered (without telling us who's offering it in case someone else pinches it first!)?

I have worked out what it would cost us to go to Tignes at October half-term, and it is considerably more than the headline £99 each.

Basic price = £125 (because it's after the 23rd October)
En-suite extra = £12
Currency extra = £18 assuming the pound stays low
Flights = £85 return with EasyJet to Geneva

Total = £240 (plus insurance)

However, this is still pretty cheap, because it includes transfers from Geneva to the chalet and back, breakfast, tea and supper, ski and boot hire, ski pass, shuttle to and from the funicular, and free use of their facilites like their computer with internet connection.

And they say that if the ski slopes shut they will sort out some other activites although these will have to be paid for.

Tino, if you can find me a better price for Hintertux before Monday I will go there instead :D

Damaged skis ;-(

Tony,
What I am trying to say is that you could check out your final option, in case you can't claim under the warranty, and get a quote for having the ski repaired, like I did with my car door.

Hopefully it can be easily and cheaply repaired.

Tony,
I would say, if they refuse to allow it under their warranty conditions, you should just get your skis fixed.

I remember, many years ago now, someone reversed end on into my car door, drivers' side, when it was parked (with my baby daughter in the back seat), and although I ran full pelt after their car (because I saw them through the window) they got away before I could read their number plate or catch them. My car door was quite badly bent. I took the car to our local specialist body work firm, and they said it would cost £500 to make the door look like it did before (and this was about 15 years ago) because it would need a new panel etc.

But when I told them it wasn't an insurance job and I just wanted the door fixed, they said £10 plus VAT and they just put a plunger on it and pulled it out straight. And it looked fine - only if you looked very carefully could you see a faint cracked line, and it stayed like that until I scrapped the car.

I know a car door isn't quite the same thing as a ski, but I would still think you could get it fixed for a reasonable price, as long as you didn't mind it not looking perfect.

Anyway, I hope you get it sorted and they pay up.

Well, if he wants to stay north, how about this one, near Pitlochry (it's much nearer to Oban than the Lake District which is about 250 miles away):

We went to Pitlochry last year and it's an amazingly beautiful area, with plenty to do (although I'm sure it does have a pretty high rainfall - don't know about the midges though).

Tony,
Whoever it was who went out after us (I'm sorry I don't have a memory like Bandit's), said that they'd closed the whole slope for I think 3 days, because of very heavy snowfall, but she was okay, because it was just before she went. Maybe it's in my thread - I haven't re-read it.

There was pretty much no snow apart from on the pistes when we went, and that was pretty icy, but we still had a great time.

Good deal on Smartwool socks...

Thanks very much, Dave Mac. Do you think Pablo has that many?

The only problem is that one wouldn't normally take more than 7 pairs of socks (because most people don't ski for more than 7 days at a time). So that's probably not enough pairs to 'even out' the left and right sock loss, unless you go on plenty of ski holidays and keep lots of spare pairs in the drawer at home to renew the pairs.

I do know where odd socks go to, though, because I'm always finding them when I'm cleaning up after my holidaymakers. I find them under the sofa cushions, stuck at the top of the washing machine, at the back of the airing cupboard, under the bed, under the sofa, and at the back of the wardrobe. And I would guess the holidaymakers also lose them in the car and on the beach etc.
