Skiing in Garmisch in March
Started by User in Germany, 6 Replies
Hi,

I haven't been there before, but am also planning to go for a weekend trip in early March. It looks like a good resort - the advantage for us was proximity to Munich airport.

There's a good website here:
http://www.zugspitze.de/main_en.php

- which has an interactive map showing the ski-ing area.

We haven't found accommodation yet - the friend I'm going with has emailed the tourist board.

Have you found your hotel yet?

And has anyone else on this forum been there and able to recommend hotels/guesthouses? We're trying to work out where we might stay without needing to bus or drive around the resort too much.

We've done this and stayed in Brides-les-Bains which is at the base of Meribel - you get a 25 min gondola up to the ski area.

Very good value and I think there may be some deals around.
I've checked on Mapquest for driving directions and it says Garmisch is about 1 hour 20 from Munich while Seefield is a little longer - about 1 hour
45.

So not much in it, but the closer the better as we'll only be there for a weekend. Still looking for accommodation - my friend's emailed the tourist office at Garmisch and they've come up with some package prices.
Thanks Rose - my friend has just pointed out that Seefeld is about 2 hours from Munich, so we're looking at Garmisch too which would be closer.

We'll be arriving into Munich late at night so don't want to have to drive too far.

Does anyone have any tips about Garmisch? One reader review I saw said the upper lifts were a bit outdated, which doesn't concern me too much - but is it possible to ski back to village level there? And any recommendations for self-catering accomodation?

(I know Garmisch is Germany and this is an Austria forum, but the Germany forum is pretty quiet)

Thanks again.
Many thanks for the welcome everyone, and for all the suggestions.

We'd really like to avoid a bus or car journey to the lifts and to be able to ski back to wherever we're staying - especially as it's only a three-day trip

An extensive ski area isn't too much of priority as we won't need that for a shot stay.

So Seefeld looks a distinct possibility as www.wtss.co.uk says there's a red run right back down.

I haven't had a good look at the other resort reviews yet, so there might be others which are equally convenient.

We've just booked flights to Munich on 5 March and would like advice on a good resort and accomodation within a shortish distance - ideally less than two hours away as the flight arrives very late.

We'll have a car, but would like to be close to the ski lifts if possible.

Snow-sureness is important, so it might be best to wait until nearer the time.

We're both intermediate ski-ers. Self-catering would be ideal.

Thanks in advance :-)
