Weekend ski trip from Munich airport - where should we go?

Seefeld is a lovely place, been 5 times. Three seperate ski areas. I dont think there is to much self catering really, more hotels I think. Have you looked on the Official Seefeld site, that gives a lot of info on there.

We've just booked flights to Munich on 5 March and would like advice on a good resort and accomodation within a shortish distance - ideally less than two hours away as the flight arrives very late.
We'll have a car, but would like to be close to the ski lifts if possible.
Snow-sureness is important, so it might be best to wait until nearer the time.
We're both intermediate ski-ers. Self-catering would be ideal.
Thanks in advance :-)

Hi skifun, welcome to J2ski.
March 5 is a Thursday, so the Autobahns will be relatively quiet.
So, you are in luck! Less than two hours from Munich Airport, you reach Worgl. Then 7 km up the mountain, and you will arrive in Niederau. Good resort for intermediates, beginners, and a few other testing off piste runs. Not a big ski area, but beautiful, and very friendly.
For self catering, and the best service in Niederau, you might try the Auhof. It has the best views.
http://www.auhof.co.uk/
It is 7/8 minutes up the hill opposite the mountain, but you will get ferried to and from the slopes every day. You will also get the best information about the area, and heaps of help. The owners are a lovely English family.
I use Munich, (in fact will probably be there that week). So for car hire, two suggestions-
If you have airmiles, you can get a car hire for free.
If not, try Quidco, go through them to Auto Europe.
Ski well.

Well, theres a few good suggestions made now.
I guess it all depends on what they are looking for from their skiing.
I dont know much about the German side to be honest, but I have done both Niederau and Mayrhofen, and both a complete contrasts.
Look carefully into each before you decide, and take a look at what is said about them on www.wtss.co.uk as they give good resort reviews.
Let us know where you choose.

Many thanks for the welcome everyone, and for all the suggestions.
We'd really like to avoid a bus or car journey to the lifts and to be able to ski back to wherever we're staying - especially as it's only a three-day trip
An extensive ski area isn't too much of priority as we won't need that for a shot stay.
So Seefeld looks a distinct possibility as www.wtss.co.uk says there's a red run right back down.
I haven't had a good look at the other resort reviews yet, so there might be others which are equally convenient.

Thanks Rose - my friend has just pointed out that Seefeld is about 2 hours from Munich, so we're looking at Garmisch too which would be closer.
We'll be arriving into Munich late at night so don't want to have to drive too far.
Does anyone have any tips about Garmisch? One reader review I saw said the upper lifts were a bit outdated, which doesn't concern me too much - but is it possible to ski back to village level there? And any recommendations for self-catering accomodation?
(I know Garmisch is Germany and this is an Austria forum, but the Germany forum is pretty quiet)
Thanks again.
