Open a Nationwide Flex account and use this to take out money at the resort. It's the only card i know of without extra charges. You will get the best rate this way, better than at the resort and better than getting Euros here in the UK. If you use Euros in BG the locals will 'round off' and you'll always be paying more. And, definately DONT change at Sofia airport! In the airport terminal you will find a cashpoint so take Levs out there when you arrive.. if you arrive at terminal 1, turn left into the 'cafe' as you come into arrivals and you'll find the cashpoint in there on the right. :D

Apparently, it's only been used for two afternoons' skiing.
Do you think it will mould around my feet with use or is there another way?

which poles

Here i am standing at home in my boots, with a tape measure in my hand.
I make it 110cm with arm roughly at rightangles. So, add about 5cm for the pointy bit...and so i'm looking at about 115cm, does that sound ok?
It's not easy 'popping in' to a ski shop where i live! Would be about 90 miles to the nearest. Ebay is far closer :D

Can someone please tell me what size of poles one should be using? I've always hired in the past and not taken much notice of the poles...
My skis are usually 165cm and i'm 5'10"

rasca wrote:Velka raca, Vratna or Martinske Hole would be more up your street then. The best accomodation will only be 80 quid tops. We've stayed in some places for as little as £50 each for a week although there were a variety of different wild animals decorating the walls! and other peoples clothes in the wardrobes. I know for sure that in Velka Raca you will be staying right in resort, very close to the lifts with free ski bus around the village.
Check out www.Velkaraca.com, www.vratna.sk and www.martinskehole.sk all great resorts and dont worry about the low altitude i've been going to slovakia for last five years and have never had a problem with lack of snow.

Thanks for this info, if you have any particular recommendations for cheap places to stay and eat please do pass them on! :-)

Yes, i now see that it includes breakfast too. Still not what i call 'cheap'though!!
And a lift pass appears to cost 169 Euros. This is surely more than at Borovets where it costs £90 i think.
And a main meal in local village 'from £4'.....I know that in a village close to Borovets i can get an excellent main meal from £2 in a new restaurant i visited recently...
It seems that we all have a different idea of 'cheap'!

There are lots of small resorts in Slovakia - many villages in the mountains have their own ski hill with 1 or 2 lifts. These are very cheap but subject to random open/closed times - they are not 'resorts' as such....

Jasna is the all-singing all-dancing resort in this part of Europe, perhaps not what you are looking for; however the beers and food are very good and very cheap....

Try Donovaly. It's a smaller Slovak resort but still retains the feel of a resort so you can get the feel of one.

Hi, i have just looked at your website and i have to say that i don't find this accommodation 'cheap'! Please correct me if i'm wrong, but for the first week in March it will cost £230 EACH person for a week?
In Borovets last year, I paid £350 for a two bedroomed apartment for 8 days. Although it had facilities for 6 people, just 4 of us shared for £87.50 each for 8 days. And this apartment was practically next door to the lifts. I hope to better this deal this year!!

Tony_H wrote:Kapaonik in Serbia, or Jasna in Slovakia are good shouts. I believe there is also some skiing to be done in Poland, although I know nothing about it. That might be nearest, and easy to get to if you are hitching.

Hi Tony, what is Jasna like...have you been there?
A quick google search and it seems a little expensive...
