The past week has seen more snow added to the bases just about everywhere - ski resorts across The Alps, Pyrenees, Rockies and elsewhere have reported fresh snow. Much of the French Alps has had steady snow for several days, with accumulations exceeding half a metre. The story is similar across Switzerland and much of Austria. Northern Italy has seen very heavy snow with over a metre of fresh at a few resorts.

Dozens more resorts across Europe and the United States are now open, with a number of earlier-than-planned openings being reported for this coming weekend (including Argentiere in the Chamonix Valley and La Clusaz in the Aravis).

Scotland is currently getting more snow, although only Cairngorm is open at present.

European Weather and Snow Next Week

The longer range forecasts we hinted at last week have firmed up nicely and the immediate outlook for The Alps is very promising. Temperatures will continue to fall and the mountains are going to be very chilly indeed over the next few days, thanks to cold air being drawn down from the Arctic.

This cold air will mix with moist air as it pushes South, leading to some significant snowfall in many areas. The latest forecasts, which have been fairly consistent for the past few days, are showing three successive bands of snow likely to cross The Alps - with snow concentrated at the start and end of this weekend, and then again mid-week.

Depending on location, any or all three systems could bring heavy snow to low levels. The forecast models are indicating a brief rise in temperature coinciding with major precipitation mid-week. Depending on the exact sequence of changes that has the makings of quite a significant snow event, so stay tuned.

As next week is looking pretty interesting we'll send out an extra mail after the weekend to keep you informed, but as always keep an eye on our main Snow Forecasts Page for a quick summary of what's open, where it's snowed and what's forecast around the world.

Enjoy! 8)
This just in from Chamonix Tourist Office :-

After a few successive snowfalls, the conditions above 2000m are pretty good for so early in the season. The Grands Montets ski area, Argentière will be opening partially this week-end 27th and 28th November.

Bochard gondola and Marmottons chair lift will provide access to skiing up to 2800m.

To celebrate the first weekend of the season, Compagnie du Mont Blanc offers special rates!

20 € 4 consecutive hours / 25 € day – adult 16-64 years

17 € 4 consecutive hours / 21 € day – children 4-15 years & seniors 65-74 years

12.50 € day – veteran 75+ years

71 € day – family

The Grands Montets area will close during the week, but be open on a daily basis from the 4th December on (conditions permitting).
It's all starting to unravel... the only thing that can stitch it back together is a picture of Tony's collection...
Perhaps some of the most poignant reports of avalanches that we get each season concern members of the ski patrol - the pisteurs - who work to keep the rest of us safe.

As reported in The Durango Herald, an avalanche on Monday claimed the life of a patroller at Wolf Creek.

Scott Kay, who had worked at the ski area for 16 years, was doing avalanche-control work when he became caught in a slide, said Bob Brammer, a close friend.

When the accident happened, he was working with professional ski patrollers who took every step to free him and resuscitate him, Brammer said. A medical helicopter was dispatched out of Farmington, he said.

Kay was skiing a routine avalanche-control route when he was caught in a slide, according to a news release from the Mineral County Sheriff's Office.

When Kay did not respond to radio contact, fellow ski patrollers responded to find him, the release said. They located him with avalanche beacons and probes. They dug him out of about 4 feet of snow.

Life-saving measures were started and continued for about 1½ hours.

The snows are coming; be careful on the mountain all.
Sew it would seam.

I'm sure we can spin out a good yarn to knit something together...
How cruel is that? Jon's stuffed a dormouse inside a chestnut! Is that one of Hugh Furry-Watsit's recipes?

I am liking you, Stez.

Steady Tony... AlistairS clearly got cut-off and meant to complete his post with "drop the bottle in and nail the lid down."
