OldAndy,
I believe you :D

You are obviously a very accomplished skier and just being modest about your abilities.

I found this about the Verbier speed run:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/travel/winter_sports/article3287787.ece

The guy in this article achieved 85 mph the first time he went down that run.

And there is a load about the Les Arcs speed run here, and about poor Caitlin Tovar (the womens GB champion speed skier) who died because she went out of control before she started and went down the mogul field instead:

There is absolutely no way I'd ever go anywhere near that run, and I totally take my hat off to Old Andy for having a go :D

Am going to a resort called Rusutsu on the northern island of Hokkaido hopefully to get some good deep powder. while much of Europe is missing out on decent snowfalls, Japan has had a pretty good season of snow so far, after a fairly late start to the season.

Thanks Surfarthur :D
I hope you have a great time. Please let us know how you get on and what you think of the resort.

Sandra22,
Are you looking to buy or rent skis?

Most beginners rent them for their first few ski holidays. If you're renting then make sure you go to a good hire shop and tell them truthfully how much experience you've had and your height, shoe size and weight and leave it up to them to pick you the right skis and boots and adjust them so that you can learn to ski safely on them.

Where and when are you going ski-ing? I hope you have a great time :D

Old Andy,
That sounds seriously scary

Well done for surviving :D

I got curious about this (sorry everyone, off topic I know) and looked it up on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_skiing

According to this the world ski speed record is 156 mph and there are quite a few special ski runs in various resorts for doing this, which are only 1-2 Km long (there's one in Les Arcs for example).

In his St Moritz report Tony says he got up to 80 km per hour. I sometimes feel like I'm doing about 100 mph but I suspect I'm only doing about 15 mph

You can get to Bourg St Maurice from London other than on a Friday or Saturday, but not direct. You have to change in Paris, and either get the night sleeper train to Bourg, or get a day train and change again (in Chambery Challes I believe).

Maybe you could try phoning RailEurope.co.uk and ask about it? We've changed in Paris several times but not yet taken the sleeper from Paris to Bourg.

I mean, compulsory for ski instructors, as part of the job description.
Brooksy,
Well I don't really know that he can ski at 100 mph, but I'd love to see him have a go (in a safe place of course) :D
