I spent a week in Thredbo (Australia) in 2013 in a lodge watching it rain. The snow that eventually followed was a season saver but that was a depressing week.

I spent a day in Thredbo in 1990 watching it rain. Next day went to Blue Cow where it had been snowing and had a great day. The following day it snowed in Thredbo and the rest of the trip was fantastic! :)

Historically if you go to a resort in Europe without a glacier skiing before 3rd week of December you are taking a gamble. Long term forecast is looking like freezing down to 1000m around 8th of December and snow from 12th onwards for Northern Alps.

Am off skiing on Wednesday in full knowledge that good food, wine, some time in gym or hiking is how my time will be spent. Many times better than work!

I agree with what you say about it being a gamble in early December and admire your calm acceptance of the situation but most people book a ski holiday to go skiing. They can go to the gym or go hiking any time! I understand their concern; I would be be if I'd booked for early of mid-December (many resorts have postponed their opening dates). I'm bemused that you are bemused!

It appears to be procedural, Dave. They are insistent that you can only join the group on a Monday. Seems crazy to me, but there we are!
